There are several companies that sell GM and Ford kits. You will spend around $400-$1,000 depending on the kit. If you don't mind living without a locking torque converter the stock 4 speed automatic transmission should move either vehicle.

Bentsen's. Google 'em! They have a really nice system - not cheap but they make sure that the alignment is correct and those other details that matter.

Might want to check out my project thread on here - starts with "I'm Back......". I'm putting an OM617 in an S-10 for Land Speed Racing. If you want more details you can go to then "Forums", then "Project Cars", then look for my thread "As Promised - Dan's Sorta New LSR Project (or something like that)". It has pretty detailed pics of the installation, the way I did the frame mounts, etc., etc.

I'm just finishing the scattershield for the stock M-B automatic which I'll run for now. Plan to convert to a GM or maybe Toyota manual at a later date as finances recover. Right now the goal is to get to the end of the track by the end of April.

another place....

There's a different forum I hang out on called 4btswaps --- and it's more than just 4bt guys. There are also guys putting OM617s into stuff. You might want to check it out.

My 4bt 2000 Dodge Dakota 4x4 crew cab is over there. And I have the same userid as here.

Bam

As Promised - Dan's (sorta) New LSR Project

From what I've heard you can expect similar or worse mileage. So something in the mid to low 20s. I wouldn't be surprised by 22mpg

Simpler's link works great!

There's a LOT of verbage in the thread - a lot of the guys know me in real life and/or we've been on-line together for so long we feel like family so there's a lot of questions and/or BS. While you're welcome to read any or all of it you might want to skip to the pics - they are kind of the meat of it. There's about 22 pages of it so far so there's a lot to look at!

Thanks for the link - I'm kind of a computer dunce.

No clue. Fuel economy is FAR from my concerns! I'm just after all the HP I can squeeze with my budget. Like FE everywhere, depends on the engine, the vehicle's aero, tire type and inflation, etc, etc.

You can improve aero a LOT by lowering the truck and adding a solid tonneau if it's a pickup. I did this on my '02 Ram/Cummins and I've gotten as much as 24/25 MPG on a road trip, up from 17/18. It's lower by 3" front and 4" rear and I have a hard BakFlip 2 tonneau. Same tires (Michelins) before and after. I put in new plugs and wires before the trip...... er, maybe not.......

An Astro would be sort of a worse-case scenario as it's big and boxy and has the aero of a barn door. If FE is your goal, go with the S-10.

Dan
