Here are my pictures for today:
http://www.zemkowski.com/91350sd-2/index.html Interior is 90% cleaned, front end is 75% straight, old radiator out, old fan and fan clutch out, just got the water pump out, new (used) grille. notice the scarring from the impellers inside the water pump housing from being pushed in there. All I need to complete the mechanical end of things is a fan shroud (forgot to order it). I should know how it runs in a few days! |

Good progress, John.
How did you unhook the spring in the pic attached? |

Undo the top nut, get a screwdriver, and put it in that hole on the top of the plastic part that the bolt goes thru.
Pivot it back to relive the pressure on the bolt, slide the bolt out from the back and release your screwdriver, it will come down and the spring will just come off from the top and bottom, thus relieving tension on the belt. |

204K!
I've been following your post as I have a 91 350sd w/ 118K and I especially enjoyed you pictures. It was like looking into the engine bay of my little beastie. Chris Haney's post is right on target as far as important preventative measures to take w/ the 350 motor. The reason it has been known to bend rods is because it ingests chunks of coked( cooked oil) carbon that has either leaked out the front end of the turbo or from blowby and been cooked to the air plenum and intake manifold by the exhaust from the egr. Good Luck! I love mine and I have seen one for sale with 247K, so they will run with longevity.

Tensioner Relief Lever!
The MB tire iron fits into the black pivot's hole pretty good when used as a lever to relieve the tensioner tension too!

Wow!! She looks awesome. I want another deal like that! I thought my 260e for $1000 was a deal. THAT car is a deal. You will make a nice one out of her I am sure. Nobody will believe what you paid either.
later,

OK!
It's all back together, New radiator New fan & fan clutch Used grille New water pump New termostat New fan shroud Started it up, added the coolant, but in a few minutes, the temp shot up to 100+ again. I take off the radiator cap and put the heat on full, thinking its a vapor lock, but nothing helps. I take a shot, and go down to the benz dealer and get a thermostat,, BINGO! Car really runs great, with alot of power, more power than my 300SDL. I am going to turn up the tranny modulator a bit, the shifts are a bit too soft for my liking. Now all it needs is a drivers side headlight bezel and it could use a belt tensioner shock absorber (rattles a tiny bit). I'll post some new pics tommorow. |

Glad to hear you like the car turbodiesel......seems like you got an incredible deal....I remember some of your postings a while back saying the 350's were no biggie over the older SDL.....well I think you can now see that there was truly an improvement in the later generation cars in regard to drivability and power....the cars, when they are running correctly, are the most gasoline like engines that I think MB has ever built ...excluding the last E-class diesel that is.......
good luck...enjoy your new car..I am sure it will see a lot more of your driving time that your 300SDL does Warren 1992 300SD Columbus Ohio |

Actually, the question is now probably "how much for the 350SD".
I bought this car with the intention of fixing it and selling to my uncle, but he went out and bought a 300SDL from Wisconsin. Right now, I can't really afford to keep the car.. |

Yes, I feel there is a pretty significant improvement in power now, especially when you first hit the gas before the turbo kicks in, it almost feels like a regular gas car.

If I were you and you could't afford to keep both I think would personally sell the SDL and then drive the '91 SD as your daily driver...better mileage quieter, faster, smoother car
