Did you try putting a rag over it and cranking the engine. The rag will catch it from shooting out like a bullet. Also, you sure there’s a HS in there?

Yes it looks like the injector threads have been damaged. Did you verify that a heat shield exists in that hole?

No I didn’t try cranking it.

There definitely is one in there. It just got progressively more mangled as I tried to hit it out in different ways.

See above picture. I think I messed up the threads slightly when I tried prising out with a screwdriver.

Time for a new prechamber then. Take another picture with a view a little further out so we can see the top of the head for markings indicating which shims had been installed if any.

What are we looking for on a further out picture?

Something like this?

Are shims reusable? Do all prechambers get shimmed the same in the engine? If I can’t get to the car a while, does it make sense to buy a selection so I can hit the ground running when the time comes?

I assume the shims are there so the glow plug hole lines up on the prechamber?

Were there differences in prechambers across engine years? Or are all 601/602/603 prechambers the same 601 part number?

Thanks!!

The shims are not shims but seals. All the same. I would try an easy out and set it good, then get a slide hammer with a vise grip attachment and gently start tapping it out. Might want to spray some penetrating oil and let it soak a bit.

We may be talking two different things.

The seal is the little washer that is also called a heat shield, right? I’m . My understanding is that it does both.

Is there another seal/shim that goes under the prechamber or the spline nut?

I’m concerned that I messed up the threads on the prechamber. Plus I also hammered that stupid heat shield so much that now it’s spread more/worse.

So I’m concerned that Im hosed and I want to make sure i get all the right parts. If there are other shims for the prechamber I want to get the right set so I can do the job once.

I’m going to need to get a slide hammer regardless that can do prechamber removal. I may actually have a slide hammer someplace, the real question becomes where I get a good attachment for the removal of the prechamber… or a vice grip attachment.

I had tried the lag bolt in the hole and it didn’t work. The hole in the washer bent before it pulled out.

My mistake. Your car has an OM602. I thought this was from the original thread that has an OM615. I was wondering about the splines and that confused me. Now i understand. I have not removed a pre-chamber from any aluminum head diesels........yet.

There are no marks indicating any shims were used. Head off is required to measure the height of the protrusion to ensure the piston doesn't contact the end. Maybe you can measure what you remove to ensure you are within tolerance with the replacement prechamber.

You are in a conundrum!

You absolutely need to repair those threads in order to remove the prechamber from above.

If I don’t grind the mating surface for the prechamber, I can’t see how it would be that close…. Especially if I measure the two prechambers and find them to be the same. What am I missing?

I don’t think the threads are really damaged. I looked at them, they had a bit of a dent in them, and I am willing to tap/chase them if I know the thread size/pitch. But I don’t think a well lubricated puller on a slide hammer will have any issue. They aren’t buggared real bad at all.

The per-chamber has a tab on the side that locates the position.

See the picture of the pre-chamber pulling tool which has 2 threaded ends. One of those sides is going to fit your pre-chamber and will also chase the threads somewhat.

It used to be if the pre-chamber tool was made by a US company like Sir Tool the prechamber tool was threaded for 5/8 x 18 threads and you could use the Autozone large free rental slide hammer.

The Euro made pre-chamber pullers are threaded for metric 12mm something which means you either need an adapter to fit US made slide hammers or you need a metric slide hammer with the proper threads.

I don't have access to my notes on thread sizes.

Question About Precombustion Chamber Pulling Tool

Looking at some other threads it looks like M22x1.5 is the size you need for the prechambers that used the splined retainer rings. You need a special socket to remove the splined ring.

You are also going to need a special socket for the splined prechamber retaining rings. See attached pic. Laser Tools makes a less expensive decent one.
