Crawl under the back of the car with a rag and some carb cleaner. Clean off the tag and see what the ratio you have. We can figure from there.

it sounds like most of a day of work. changing tires is probably an easier trick. however, you can derive the axle ratio from the part number on the speedometer, which should be easier than climbing under the car.

to pull the diff, you need to disconnect 3 Flex disc bolts, then remove the 2 13mm axle bolts in the hubs, then push out the axles, then pull then support the subframe and remove the 4 13mm bolts on the diff mount, them remove the 8 15mm cover plate bolts and then remove the 2 axle clips, then get the axles out, then lower the subframe and then remove the 4 19mm diff to subframe nuts, and the diff is free... took all of 30 minutes in the pullapart yard last week... no jack... fun watching the diff sitting on a tire hoping it didn't fall into the gravel...

I'm wondering if the op car is running correctly. Nobody else who has gone to the (presumably) 247 diff has found it to be so objectionable.

I was thinking that too - which is why I suggested to check what the ratio actually is...

I did, maybe a 5-10% reduction in overall acceleration, much nicer on the highway. Never had any issues with lack of power for hill climbing. But the engine was running quite good..

Where on the diff is the ratio? All I can locate is a MB part number. It has also been mentioned that the ratio can be deciphered from the speedo?

Here's a thread to help with that

Differential identification?

The gear ratio should be stamped on the flat surface of the back of the diff, where the cover bolts on. It will be an area where the diff housing is wider than the cover with enough room to stamp numbers about 1/4" tall.

Then there is the old standby of jacking up one side, turning the wheel one turn and counting the driveshaft revolutions....and multiply by two.

From the REAR of the car.....look at the lower lefthand corner area of the Differential. It's there; putty knife the area and then brake cleanner.

Okay....on some differentials, it might be on the lower righthand corner.....but I know the w123 differentials and the w126 differentials in my diesels are on the lower lefthand corner area.

2.47 diff ratio. I eliminated my resonators which seems to have woken the car up a bit. No diffs in the wreckers for diesels. Found one, but it is missing the cover and full of rust -no thanks. I did find an s600 with a v12 sitting at the pnp. That would wake the car up a bit!

You have other power issues. My 85 td has the 2.47 diff and I climb the mountain I live on (monteagle on 1-24) all the time with wife, three kids and 3-500 pounds of feed in the back at 70 mph with some pedal left.
Monteagle is 7 miles of uphill as anyone who has run i-24 can attest to.
