the "key slot", 1977 240D Exterior door handle

hi folks,

1977 240D

what's the deal with the little chrome slot door? it has two parts besides the door itself, a tiny axle and a spring. i have tried crimping the groove where the axle lies and i have installed the spring in both its less tense and more tense orientations, but the little door always falls out of place, blocking the key, and makes me remove the whole handle again. at this point i'm wondering if i should leave it out permanently. anyone know how to approach this piece of th machinery?

thanks in advance....

I suppose it depends on what kind of car you have. You could remove the parts that are jamming and leave it at that depending on your desire to have the car look good. I don't know if the parts are required for water tightness but they do keep dirt out.

My '87 300D had a similar problem, the parts you are working with were missing, perhaps because the car had been burglarized during a previous ownership. In any case, I learned that the lock cylinder can be replaced but the rest of the parts are part of the door handle. I found a used door handle on the internet and replaced mine so all was good.

The one on my trunk messed up.....about six months ago, I just removed it.....haven't had a problem yet....I've read you can get a new one keyed to your car from the dealer.

if mine have the problem despite appearing complete and unmolested then I'd be hesitant about expecting other used handles not to.

still hoping there are viable repair tactics out there!
