I drive my 190d 2.2 more than my 300SD....
It is to be seen if I drive it more than my 420 once I get it out for the spring. I am guessing not....

...so sell the 300D with 242,000 and keep the 240D! If you find it more pleasing in almost every way, then get off the W124 cool-aid! Put gsxr on the ignore list if you have to! See the light, brother! See the light!
...yeah, maybe a little over the top . But still... sell the 300D and keep the 240D.

Sell the low mileage creampuff then.
You already have two of that car, one has sentimental attachments, the other is just nice, and the 4-speed is simple and fun to drive. For me, the choice would be to sell the car that will generate the most cash and gets the least use, the 100k 300D. Then you can go to the wife, and show her how buying the 240 and selling a 300 has generated a positive cash flow.

When I decide to winnow out the fleet, a car that is essentially a duplicate of another I have becomes a prime candidate for selling.
Lets see: All have 4 doors All are diesels All are same make Pick your least favorite and let it go. I find I enjoy a much more diverse selection over duplication. Saying that, I do own 3 W124 series cars (out of 11 total), but each one performs a different function. One is a diesel sedan, one is a gas wagon, one is a cabriolet. Commonality sure, but enough differences to make each one special. Jim

It is older and less refined, of course, and the newer car is more pleasing in certain ways. Is that 'superior'? Really? I went from a w126 to a Dodge Magnum (remember, the 300/Charger/Magnum were based on the w210 platform) for two years, long story on the why, then back to a w123. I expected the return to the w123 to be a brutal adjustment after the smooth and powerful Dodge, especially the loss of the power/heated seats and tilt wheel. In fact, it took about 48 hours to get re-acclimatized, and about 6 days before I forgot all but a few features of the much newer car.

I think it's because driving the 240D is a much more involved process.
Being slower and having to shift your own gears means you are always part of the process as opposed to just being part of the ride (I've noticed the same thing when switching between the 350 and the G) I love both but driving the Gwagen is far more involved.

I know what you mean. My daily driver is a 2012 Honda Odyssey which is an incredibly comfortable car to drive but given the choice I would drive my 240D every day (sadly I cant due to the insurance restrictions)

For the three days I drove my '74 240 (before it got smashed) it was way more fun than my daily driver. Surprisingly the insurance is going to fix the car (the estimate was ~$7200, paid $1500 for the car) so I guess I get to enjoy it for a while to come haha

I, for one don't believe the 240D is inferior at all. I own 3 of them myself. Sure they may be slower than a 300D with a turbo, but they are simplistic and elegant to me. Maybe it's that driving the car reminds me of a simpler time in my life when I was younger bringing back good memories. Maybe its that the car is built of metal with a feeling of being secure and not plastic panels. As Roy put it, your driving a, "bank vault". Maybe it's the reliability of the vehicle.
