metal flakes

so i was cleaning out my oil pan and found some metal flakes in the pan. they where only visible after i added engine degreaser. The engine does tick but it comes and goes and its from the front of the engine. i dont think its bearing steel and looks more like parts of a piston. The oil catch was broken off the oil pump so i think the pistons were not getting the oil they needed on the high way. metal flakes-photo-3-.jpg

Metal flakes are never a good sign. The question (that I understand you may not be able to answer) is, where are the flakes coming from and are they a sign of a pending disaster? Are the flakes ferrous (will they stick to a magnet)?

well they look to be aluminum and not steel but i didnt think to use magnet. the flakes were not very big at all and i wonder if it came from the cam. there are some weird wear marts on the side of the lobes. when i take the cover off i'll take more pictures. i just hope that they dont cost me a engine anytime soon.

There are apparently places in the US that will do oil analysis for you for a reasonable price. I think that several forum members do this once in a while.

The analysis is apparently able to tell you if it is plain bearing bits or whatever...

Blackstone labs is who I use. They can tell you what sort of metal it is and make suggestions on its source.

metal chips ?

if it were my car my next move would be to cut the oil filter apart and see how much metal is in it,a few specs here and there = no worries, however if you find any serious amount you have a problem somewhere in that engine!

I did an oil change with my friend on his tai Jetta and had more metal come with his oil than mine. I'm taking the head off the Benz in 2 weeks to track down the tick.
