I did the same thing to my car that pretty much every Honda and Acura owner does. I got in it and drove it.
And every now and then I put gas in it......

It's almost done, just need to replace the brake light switch so I can get my state inspection and get it back on the road (legally), but I'm having a heck of a time getting wrenches in there behind the brake pedal to loosen the retaining nuts, could really use some pointers from somebody who has tackled this job before.

W123 240D Brake Light Switch R&R Tips?

Thanks,
Nate

You just need the long skinny extensions about 12 or so inches long to get behind the brake pedal.

Well, I actually did this very same thing on Sunday, but with the 80 240D.
Drove about 65 miles to Plesanton to the Good-Guys Street Rod car show. Hit the swap meet and picked up a bunch of tools, sockets, extentions, slide hammer etc.... and then went to Sweet Tomatoes for dinner and back home.

Today I drove 15 miles to Felton in the old Datsun PU, to change the VCV on a guys 85 300SD. Used the Mity-Vac on the valve and the clear tube I was using filled up with black oil. so it was definately not working.

Removed the 4 screws that holds down the ALDA lid and turned the plate sideways to see how the VCV lever connected inside the IP. the valve is a PITA to wiggle out and get it un hung up with the Oil Filter Housing the IP, and the heater hose that twists above the housing from the head. just not a lot of wiggle room.

Getting the new one in and keeping the 2 gaskets and metal ring on w/o falling off, and the square plate lined up for the little 10mm bolts. get 3 in and the 4th hole is off. then realize the damn plate isn`t square and had to remove the bolts and rotate the plate to find it`s sweet spot. doing this while laying on top of the engine and holding one of those free HF Flash Light to see what I was doing.

Used the MV to make sure the lever was hooked in the right spot, then screwed down the ALDA lid/plate. remove the Turbo intake hose, started car, all was well, (no run-away engine scenario) buttoned it up.
She sure shuts off nice and quick now.

Removed the Instrument cluster and blew out the vacuum line with Brake Cleaner and then blew it out with a can of compressed air.

The best part, he paid me $100 for doing it.

Diesel purge, changed the fuel filters, bled the injector lines.

Replaced that damn brake light switch on the 240D, gave it an oil and fuel filter change, then took it out on I95 for the first time in two years, just to make sure I could still bury the needle on the speedometer.

Yep.

I replaced the three remaining injection pump valve o-rings and seal washers, replaced a leaking oil level sender unit and replaced a leaking steering gearbox. I think now perhaps I have all the leakages under control...for a while there the dripping under the car was pretty bad.

Also I car washed the underbelly pans thoroughly.

Put diesel purge into the tank and wired a 2nd set of brake lights. Wow it is a whole lot brighter, worth the $9 we spent to do it.

I forgot that I replaced the three remaining 'old' glow plugs (intake was off) and cleaned out the EGR that was stuck shut.

Yesterday I jacked up the 240 to check the oil levels in the Diff and transmission, and do a visual check of everything. noticed the rear clamp on the exhaust was a little loose. could see where the pipe was working in the slip joint. tightened that up.

The end of the rear muffler where the pipe exits, there is soot on the bottom side, so there is a crack there or it is rusting and leaking, so will keep an eye on that. the rubber do-nuts are in great shape.

Noticed the rear Flex Disk is starting to develope a few cracks.

Dropped the car down and ran the Datsun PU up on the ramps and jacked up the rear.
I have had a sort of wind sound past the windows, that started a month or more back on my way to pnp. sounded like it was in the dash over on the center right. I thought maybe water going through the heater or...? but has developed to where Iam thinking a bearing in the trans going out.

The other day I was driving, and using a 3/8Th 12" extention, and placing it on the shift lever knob in 5th 4th and 3rd gear up to my ear. I can hear a sort of thumping sound don`t get it in 1st or 2nd as much.
I was hoping maybe it is the Clutch, or TO Bearing.

Finally drain the 5-spd and the oil is grey and dirty, and has that look like silver paint has. definately metal wear.
I fill it back up with clean oil and take her for a run (can only hope) and it is still there. so maybe next week I`ll be pulling the eng and trans out. I do have 2 spare transmissions One gasser and one Diesel trans. If I use the gasser, need to swap the front 1/2 of the cast. starter on other side.

I replaced all the bearings somewhere around 200K miles when the input shaft bearing started to make some noise. now we are at 474+K and we are back at it again.

Need to get this thing back up and running, my wings are sort of clipped going to PNP.

TODAY.

I jacked up the 240 and replaced the rear Flex Disk. Lookiing at it after I got it out, showed a few more crackes than I could see yesterday. good think I cought it when I did. we have a few long distance trips coming up.

A couple years ago I found 2 brand new German Flex Disks on a old rusty 240D in one of the PNP`s when we were up in Portland, Or. think they were $4.95 ea. then later on found another new one. these wern`t even dusty.

Very impressive, did you have your ear plugs in? that`s warp speed on a 240.

Be a little difficult to burry the needle in mine, with it`s 150mph spedo.

well, i figured out that i'd been getting gassed/poisoned by my exhaust the other day when i turned around to back up, and i see exhaust rolling into the cabin through the top of the back seat. my exhaust tips had been shaved/broken off so far that when not moving, the exhaust was collecting up into teh left rear fender, then getting into the trunk via the flap that allows air to escape and release pressure when you close the trunk, then up and into the cabin at the top of the back seat. i forgot to take a "before" pic, but here is the "after" pic also showing my hose clamp over the stock rubber exhaust hanger to reduce swinging. YESSS \m/

edit: the welding is not my handiwork, i paid a muffler shop to do it. i don't weld, and i don't mount/balance tires.

New clips installed for mounting the transmission encapsulation panel and installed a new grille over the electric fans in front.

I will recommend to use some clear tubing when checking the vacuum Fuel shutoff valve. I replaced one on a friends 85 300SD two weeks ago. It had trouble shutting off, or wouldn`t, was hard to start and ran bad.

The guy was replacing every vac line and connector w/o any results. so First I checked the Vac Valve, a couple pumps, and black engine oil started to rise rapidly towards the Mity-Vac thru the clear tubing.

The guy called me the next day and was excited, the hard starting and rough running and lack of power was gone.

I have that same model MV.
