Odd tapered rubber fuel line connection

Working on a 1972 220D and I think that little tapered rubber hose that connects the fuel tank to the main fuel supply line could be leaking.
I was on an emply tank this morning and tried to replace it but when I slid it up, I noticed the hard line extends into the tank but how far?
Do I need to drop the tank to get a new rubber hose on there?
Yes, I have the proper size hose, by the way.

Thanks for the help!

Phil Forrest

About 15 mm.

As MikeD said, it does not go in there far. I was able to slide my hard lines forward a tad, so it was an easy fix without dropping the tank.

That is an odd little piece of hose. My old one said "Made in W. Germany" on it, which is a good reminder of how much some parts of the world have changed since these cars were built.

I found that the tapered diameters of a 300D cigar hose are a perfect fit for both the tank and the hard line.
Unfortunately, I just had to fill the tank since I have to go on a 300+ mile drive on Friday and the weather today was bad and will be tomorrow. I'll fix it when i get back from a photo shoot in Roswell.

Thanks for the tip on how long the hard line extends into the tank.

For future readers, the dealer still sells that tapered fuel hose. So if you don't have access to a cigar hose (as Phil used), just head to your nearest MB dealer. I don't remember the exact price, but it was probably $5-$10. Overpriced, but not such a big deal in the greater scheme of things.
