Adding Turbo to OM606

Yes, I know it didn't come turbo - the standard response is what was stated here http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/123412-adding-turbo-om606.html

However, I think it can be done. I'm not saying I would but I think it can be, and not unreasonably.

Reason I say this is I used to drive a Chevy with a 6.2 made by Detroit Diesel, a good engine, but nowhere near as robust as an om motor. My first 6.2 was n/a, the second had a banks turbo kit. granted the boost never exceeded 10psi:P but it was enough to up my performance to drive decently and improve my mileage - my primary concern was driving at elevation.

So what are your thoughts on this? Even a low PSI turbo like the banks? just to help on grades and elevation?

that 6.2 may not have been robust, but it has a lot of power compared to the 606... cubes makes a difference!
the 6.2 was barely putting out in stock form, and banks tweaks it closer to max.

the 606 is pushed hard out of the box, and upping it really stresses it hard.
I'm sure it can be done, but you'd have to tweak the pricey Injection pump to get much benefit from the turbo...
much cheaper to find a turbo 606 and do an engine swap I think...

if you only wanted a turbo to make up for altitude, I think it'd be ok... limit boost to 1 psi

you raise good points vstech, it was a monster of an engine in comparison. i think even single digits of additional psi would help as this car weighs much much less.

This is a popular upgrade, check over at STD for various examples.

Go for it

I have already done it to a 95 606 and if you have one go ahead and do it. I have had it modified for over 25000 miles and it has made a real big difference. I have sent my pump to Sweden to have some magic work done to it. I have a thread. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-performance-tuning/274047-i-did-95-turbo-606-a.html

That's some legit work 95300dwez, thanks for sharing.

Would an exhaust manifold from the OM603 fit? The engine from the 87s?
