84 and 85 turbo compatibility
hi guys
I'm considering import of used turbo for my 84 300sd been offered turbo from 85 w123 wagon.. those two look different so I would like to know more about compatibility issues I might come across during swap.. thank you p.s currently I can not post pics due to some software glitch...sry .

The 84 & 85 Turbo charger has an ARV valve in the casting on the front of the intake side. (Air recirulation valve) it is vacuum operated, works with the EGR. It dumps some of your boost. part of the emissions system.
The 85 Federal and the 85 Calif model are a little different. Calif model had the added trap oxidizer, so the manifolds were cast to mount up higher and the Turbo halves were clocked around a little. Here is a picture of how the eng on a cali looked. you can see the ARV on the front. Attached Thumbnails  Use a turbo from a 83 or older and it won`t have ARV, unless you need it for your emissions. if you use an 85 NON CALIFORNIA turbo you will have issues with the air cleaner fitment. the 85 does have the arv, and it forced the air cleaner to have a longer snout for the U-tube.
if the 85 turbo is from a CALIFORNIA model, the exhaust, intake, and air cleaner will need to be changed... refer to the picture above
