Torque Curves

I just found out about this forum, looks like a great place to get MD diesel info!

My first question, does anyone know where I could find torque/HP curves for an 82 240D?

Thanks,
-cj

Thanks for the reply! The shop manual is probably a good place to start, unfortunately, I don't have one, I don't even have the car, yet.

I don't really want the car either as it was rear-ended by a truck and is smashed all the way up to the front doors (I would love it otherwise!).

But, the engine is in fine shape and for $500 I can get the whole thing. Seems like it might be a fairly good deal. Depending on the torque, I have a good application for the engine.

Also, does anyone know how well the injector pump will govern engine speed with a constant "throttle" setting under varying loads? This isn't as important to me as the torque (particularly at 1800 & 2400 RPM) as I can come up with ways to compensate for it.

Sounds like it's gonna be driving a generator.

If you call Bosch or get on their Web site, You can get all the information you want on the governor. The governor is a fly-weight type governor which is standard for a lot of older diesel engines. I looked at a big 10KW MB generator several years ago. I think it had the same governor that is on the 300, or very similar. The 300SD is a type PE injection pump. The Bosch book that I purchased was Diesel In-Line Injection pumps 1 987 722 162, and Diesel Fuel-Injection Equipment Governors for in-Line Pumps. ISBN 1-85-226011-4.
The 300SD has a type RW, or at least mine does. The governor book covers all about torque curves, available min and max speeds, but unfortuatley does not cover the RW. Your best bet is to look at the governor part number stamped on the back housing. This is seperate from the injection pump part number, call Bosch and ask them if they have the book on this governor. The books were also fairly inexpensive $8 to $12.
This should help in determining if it will hold your speed, or torque under varying conditions. You may have to take the governor to an injection shop and have them set it up for what you want. I hope this has helped.

Thanks for all the info folks!

Yes, the main application I have is for a generator, hopefully around 25kW. Our ranch is in a slightly remote little chunk of Idaho, a mere $14K away from a power line, and having some power would be handy.

The other use, if I can't get enough torque out of the engine, would probably be to transplant it into a small 4WD pickup, like a Toyota or such.

I'd love to have it in an actual Mercedes, but even as well made and tough as MB's are, I'm not sure it would be up to driving on the roads we've got around here (4WD trucks get beat to death, and, at times can't even get through, like now, due to mud, I've got a 1/2 mile walk from the county dirt road to the house).

The pump looks a lot like the P7100 (only smaller) on my Dodge Cummins truck. I'm fairly well versed in diesels and injection systems, mostly John Deere and Cummins, but a lot of 'em use the Bosch P series pumps. I'm pretty new to MB diesels though. Is the engine in the 240D a sleeved or parent bore design? This particular engine has 374K miles on it, but there are maintainance records indicating it was regularly serviced. I'm hoping it's got a fair amount of life left before it needs a rebuild.
