metal shards!
Yikes!
Wife had mentioned that she had been hearing a metal on metal noise intermittantly while she drove my car a few weeks back. She tends to run the AC more than I do, so I thought maybe it was a grumpy AC compressor. But, she said she had heard it when the AC was off, too. Yesterday we were all out and I got to hear it for myself. Had the AC on, came to idle at a stoplight and then the noise started. Turned off the AC, no effect. Revved the engine and it went away, but wife tells me she has heard it while moving. Pulled over and looked under the hood with the engine running and the noise happening. Saw metal shavings flying upward from where the PS belt leaves the crankshaft. There were also little shavings on the PS belt. When we got home, I was able to look more closely. I didn't see any freshly shaved metal, but did see some severe PS belt wear. Also found that the PS belt was too tight. A few months ago, my crankshaft pulley broke off and I had it replaced by a mechanic with a used part. That was when the belt was last adjusted. So I loosened the belt, and now, with the car running and no AC on, there is a sound like a grumpy bearing, not bad, just kind of scratchy With the AC on, the car cycles between higher and lower RPM. When the RPM kicks down, car sounds normal When it kicks back up, I hear a slight grindy sound. Have not heard the really scary bad metal on metal sound again yet. So I am not sure if the sound is coming from the PS pump (seems like the seal would be gone if that was where the problem was, the AC compressor (sound may be related to AC clutch engagement, but belt and compressor head look ok at a glance), or crankshaft (again ) Where/how do I start to look for the damage?

Answer
When you see METAL shavings flying upward from where the PS belt LEAVES the CRANKSHAFT.
Typically there is: * A bolt fell between the engine and harmonic = is trapped. * The harmonic pulley screws where replaced = to LONG.. .
