Is a w123 glow plug relay serviceable? (80 300td)
My glowplug relay is stuck on, and pulls really hard on the batter/ charging system. Should I pull it apart and see what's inside, or focus on finding a replacement?
It's got three mounting bolts, and the larger plug (to the gp's and temp sensor) has 7 contact points. Thanks!! |

If you can find the interior components, which is unlikely. I'd just replace it. When the one on my bro's 300D stuck on it melted half the unit then blew the strip fuse. It was a Malaysian Bosch, not even 2.5 years old. Replaced it with a German-made Hella brand unit (more $$) but 0 issues and works great as expected.

If it's stuck on just pull the "bucket" off, removing a screw in each of the four corners. Check the solenoid (the thing that moves) and it's contacts. Sometimes water will seep in and corrode on the contacts. They should be smooth. If they're not use a piece of sandpaper or a really fine file to remove any built up corrosion. If that doesn't work, just get another one. Unless you want to spend the time testing and resoldering each component.

Is this a pin type or loop type glow plug system? I think that they changed in the mid '80 model year.
You don't have your location in your profile, so I can't tell where you're located. If it's a pin type, I think I have one of these relays.

Why do you have two of the same exact questions in two seperate threads?

I'm a real fan of eliminating complexity. Going with a manual glow system gives you complete control. The setup is simple, cheap and about as foolproof as it gets. A dash switch, a Ford solenoid, a fuse (or modify the broken glow relay and use its fuse) and some wire. If you've got the later style relay, you can even use the old harness.

Doesn't that double the chances of getting a correct answer?

Here's the inside of a glow relay. Not a lot of user serviceable parts in there. It might be possible to find a cold solder joint or two and freshen that up, but other than that...

Thanks for the advice. Mach4, I love the idea of having a manual setup, but I don't know if I have the time/ability to get it together for an upcoming trip. Also of concern, the temperature gauge reads through there if I'm not mistaken.
I'm in eastern MA, but will be travelling west. Two threads happened because my internet glitched, and I thought the first entry had been lost. |

Also, it's the later style, "pencil" plugs.

There is a temperature sensor that adjusts the glow time based on temperature, but the car's temperature gauge runs off a different sensor... at least that's my understanding. I don't have the wiring diagram available to me right now so I can't check for sure. I'm sure someone will chime in with the difinitive.

I don't know about the time constraints you're under, but it's a pretty straightforward job once you get the parts together and if you're pretty handy.
Here's a thread that describes the process I used - Glow plug relay, 1982 300D Turbo A search will turn up other threads on the topic.
