Engine Stop 602
Hi Everyone,
I am working through a failure in the engine cut off in a '92 300D. The symptoms are common, failure of the engine to shut off when you turn the key to stop. When this happens the engine stop lever is almost all the way down and only needs to be pushed down another couple of millimeters. Reading through the forums it looks like it should be a vacuum issue. If I hook up my mighty vac to the brown line (coming off the check valve) I can't maintain vacuum. If I disconnect the brown/blue line from the stop unit and plug it, then pull vacuum on the brown line it maintains the vacuum. If I connect directly to the stop unit and pull vacuum the lever goes down but it doesn't maintain vacuum and the lever comes back up. Am I correct in the conclusion that the line from the main vacuum line through the ignition switch back to the stop unit is good? And that the problem lies in the stop unit? If this is the case, how hard is it to R&R the stop unit on a 602 and are there any tips or tricks that anyone has? Thanks |

Do I understand correctly that you can't shut off the car by applying vacuum to the shutoff valve? If so, then you need to replace the shutoff valve.
There is a very good write-up here: Shut off valve replacement W124 602/3 300D 2.5. It's pretty straightforward. Be very sure, BEFORE you start the engine, that you can make the stop lever behave correctly using the Mityvac after you have installed the new shutoff valve. The one thing I found a little tricky was getting the part of the shutoff valve that goes into the IP to "hook" where it's supposed to....just took a lot of fiddling.

Thanks Shertex! I was looking for confirmation that I diagnosed it correctly. Yes, when I apply vacuum directly to the shut off valve it won't stop.
Thanks for the link as well. That one didn't show up in any of my searches. I'll probably do it next weekend and post how it goes. Thanks again. |

You might want to try cleaning the area, and 9now I just thought of this so it might be a good question to discuss) spray some brake parts cleaner into the vacuum line that goes to the shut off valve.
But first. does the shut off valve hold vacuum? The brake parts cleaner might eat up the rubber diaphragm not sure. I would imagine if it doesn't hold vacuum, it needs replacing, but if it holds vacuum, maybe it got gunked up either outside or inside. Might be worth a shot, just to not have to R&R it.
