What is behind the wood piece below the radio in a 190?
What is behind that piece? I would try to remove the center console to find out myself but I am wondering about this now and won't be seeing the car for a week while I am in Florida with my grandmother. I was trying to figure out if that would be a place to hide an updated head unit or a cup holder and have that wood piece be on hinges with a click latch like on modern cars so I could open it up. I have a feeling neither of those would work because it probably a nest of wires behind that (or not seeing as that was where the head unit was on other 190s) but still would be nice to know.

In my 190E (1989) it was the amplifier for the radio (aftermarket cassette Alpine). Removed the center console stack and replaced with updated type from a later model, so I could use the extra space:

This is an original later model upper center console for a 190E. Radio was down lower with cassette holders above.
This is the upper center console with a Euro cubby in place of the useless cassette holders. It's installed in a 190D, which originally had the old 'half' console. The two spaces allow a double DIN item to be installed, such as a navigation screen, etc. |
