EBay Euro 1987 250TD. Something funny here.

Mercedes-Benz : 300-Series 250TD in Mercedes-Benz | eBay Motors

1. No center roof rack ribs - were they removed for repainting?;
2. Airbag only on the passenger side - was it deployed in an impact?;
3. Driver's power seat switch back button appears to be upside down or from a passenger side switch;
4. Alarm key under driver's door handle and to left of rear license plate;
5. Extra antenna mounted through the center of the roof;
6. Chip in left tail light lense;
7. Missing cargo cover;
8. Driver's door panel has a speaker - not available until 1991 (at least in U.S.);
9. Wood trim on dash and door panel not standard until 1990;
10. Leather seat pattern not used until 1990;
11. Center console missing antenna switch - not deleted until 1991 or 1992; and
12. ???????????

Bottom line, it looks like it got a new paint job and interior. The lack of a driver's steering wheel gives me the greatest concern about potential prior damage, notwithstanding that it is claimed to have an "Undercarriage/Frame's [that is] straight as an arrow."

I clicked on the link with curiosity because our euro 190 is an 87. I think the antenna in the back s just an aftermarket old-style cell antenna for analog cellular. I think the guages are similar to ours. I'm puzzled by the airbag situation. Is that an airbag on the pass side? Our 190 doesn't have them- and has a similar steering wheel. I wish there were more/better pictures. There is "damage" described to the driver's seat- but no picture of it. There are no pics under the hood. I think this might not be an 87 model because vin isn't provided and title isn't described as non-salvage, etc. Odd.

Its possible the owner(s) have modded/swapped different pieces to the car over time. I've done this on my SD...half of it is genII W126 at this point.

12. No badges on the rear.
As some one who has a 250TD euro spec. It looks like something is not right with it. Priced over the moon.
The vin is given down at the bottom. It looks about right. Does the Russian decoder still work?

Check the complete VIN against the seller's title. When I bought my '84 Euro TD, Maryland had omitted the WDB prefix from the VIN and I had to get the seller to get Maryland MVA to issue him a corrected title before Virginia DMV would let me register the car.
And a couple years back, I looked at an '85 Euro W124 300D for a friend, and the PO had 'retitled' the car as an '86 300E! This discrepancy was probably not fixable. My friend passed.

If the VIN initially checks out OK, you might want to run it by your insurance carrier. Some insurers don't like grey-market cars.

Happy Motoring, Mark

It looks to have gotten an interior upgrade at some point...for whatever reason.

It seems to be on the expensive side for what it is and the questions surrounding it.

Nice car though, hope the paintwork was done well.

of the questions listed, only the ones that make the ad look good are posted. I've sent two questions to him about the airbag discrepancy, and the interior update. surprise no answer.
I reported the listing to ebay.

there is an answer to the question of airbag function, but it's not my question.
mine was quite direct about the interior and options...

Wants big bucks and didn't even bother to clean it? Guy is kook, looks to me to have a front end respray. I'd stay far away from that one.

Questions.

Has not answered my questions in any fashion. They were civil ones. Suspicions in general are high enough to start with. Car in my opinion has even too many accumulated miles for the kind on money he seems to be expecting.

Also bids are already past 7k probably from bidders that do not understand it is very unwise to do this without even inspecting the unit in one way or another. If it was repainted from the original black declared as the colour at least they did the door jams. I have this feeling that the ultimate bidder that prevails may not be that happy of a camper down the road.

VIN check from that Russian site

I found the VIN listed on the posting with the claim that ebay can't take Euro VINs. I ran it through the Russian site (http://mb.ilcats.ru/) just to see what happened and got this:

Give it a little more time and it may escallate to your price. This guy to me is probably like the guy that knocked on my door offering me his 1972 250C for only 14k several years ago.

I am guessing the interior was swapped out with a later model U.S. car, hence the presence of the wood and leather. Leather wasn't very popular in Europe, most basic cars such as a 250TD standard would have cloth, and velour was considered the top option in that market.

Was a drivers airbag standard in Euro cars in that timeframe? I have this vague recollection that airbags were either optional or that there was a delete option. Guessing the car never had a drivers airbag and the passenger airbag came along with the interior swap, but isn't hooked up or functional.

Is that the SLS pump on the front of the engine? Wierd that it's different than the OM603 we got with the tandem pump.

Might be an OK car at about $2.5K...
