1985 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel, Turbo not working

Turbo is no longer kicking in. I believe I have the german type turbo. I will take pics.

Is there anything I can do to test the turbo without just replacing or rebuilding? Is there a filter or anything I can clean out in the turbo? I have never worked with a turbo before.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Give us your symptoms. Failure of these turbos is very rare. It's more likely that the line which carries the boost signal to the ALDA is either blocked, broken or unhooked.

Thanks very much. I will try that. I've searched for a thread or post with pics on this. If anyone can link one that would be great, sorry I'm horrible at searching forums.

Take off the U-tube and get a visual if there is a blockage. Sometimes the rubber tube gasket can sneak in there.

We have 2 threads running both about a 85 300D and the Turbo isn`t working.

Turbo not working on '85 300TD

Here is what I posted on the other thread.

Is this 85 a Cali car with the Trap Oxidizer? If it gets plugged up, that will make the engine dog down.

You won`t feel the Turbo untill you get up at least 2200 RPM`s. It doesn`t just turn on at that rpm, this where it starts to get up to speed and shoves in enough air to feel the boost.

Not only clean the banjo bolt at the rear of the instake manifold, make sure the boost line is open all the way to the switch over valve. and from the SO valve to the ALDA.

If that seems ok, try connecting the boost line straight to the ALDA by passing the SO valve, If this improves, then the SO valve is leaking boost.

When was the last time you adjusted the valves?

The Waste Gate on the Turbo could be blowing off some of the boost if it has a weak spring.

How about the fuel filters, air filter.

You check the turbo by connecting a boost gauge to the line that goes to the ALDA (disconnect from the ALDA, connect to gauge or connect using a T piece). The line to the gauge must be long enough so that you can drive around with it. Boost pressure at 4000 rpm and full load must be 0.7 - 0.8 bar (10 - 11 psi).
