Question re 124 interior compatability

Do the interior parts from later 124s fit in the 87 300D? I am specifically interested in rear seats, trunk fitment, door panels, etc.

Mojoan 04-03-2013 03:57 PM

Yes they do. After the first facelift however, the door panels have wood inserts, just so you know.

TheDon 04-03-2013 04:45 PM

the trunk panels sort of fit. The trunk lid cover will not since the updated version has holes for the clips. Plus the side panels have a special mount so it fits but its not the best.

The seats will fit but the seatbelts will not sit correctly and you cannot use the later rear seat belts since they do not mount the same. The C pillar covers in my car are complete crap and I need to replace them but every time I try to carefully remove a C pillar I break a clip. Later w124 C pillars have the belt coming out perpendicular to the ground so I think there are two mount points for it, I need to investigate.

The front seats will swap over, just swap the bottom and backs to the original seat track, it will require rewiring if you have memory for the front seats. I need to do that for my drivers side. I'm still rocking the crappy leather back on a pristine tex bottom because I havent gotten around to fixing the wiring to work.

GSXR did the swap on his 87 300Ds here and here.

Aach

Damn you Pwogman! Thanks for the link to Dave's site. I cannot possibly compete with:
1. The cleanest engine this side of the Pedernales.
2. The best exterior of any 87 300D that I have ever seen. Those wheels..mama mia. Me? I am stuck with the worst of colors-Cabernet mit peeling clearcoat that even Maaco would not love.
3. The most fantastic interior update COMPLETE WITH SEAT HEATER AND ADDED GAUGES. And those little pockets outboard of the rear seats? Where does he find this stuff? Not to mention the roll up center storage between the front seats.
4. Dave's skills on these cars cannot be matched.

I'm slowly but surely updating my interior somewhat. I need to get all new door panels in blue and then the B and C pillars need to be replaced and I will be done. It's a shame that I think the white 300D was rear ended and totaled.

Where do you look for interior upgrades

Every Auto Salvage W124 that I have seen has had trashed interiors. Not only trashed by wear but open to the weather for long periods of time.

TheDon 04-04-2013 02:26 PM

I'm just fortunate to find the cars as soon as they get in the yard before idiots destroy the interior getting a knob.

I think that I answered part of my own question

After another look at Dave's site, I think that snazzy interior in his 87 came from the wreck of his 500E which would explain how great it looks. After losing my 740IL to a rear end accident in November while I was at a light, I have great empathy for him for both of those rear enders. Not optimistic about finding something similar since there were not many 500Es made in the first place.

Ditto...there's a green 95 E320 at a local JY had parchment interior which had some very good door cards and other trim, but in typical fashion someone ripped the door cards off the door looking for speakers. In the process I think they destroyed all the wood etc. It's a shame when the things in the way get destroyed for no good reason.

I recently found a 92 300SE in a u-pull JY that had received the same treatment; door cards were ripped from the doors. Amazingly most of the wood survived the abuse except for one I needed from the front right door. This same car had a rear sunshade option and I needed the hat shelf....unfortunately someone destroyed it to get at the speakers only to abandon the speaker on the floor after they'd done the damage. They also destroyed the sunshade by trying to pull it up manually.....so much destruction.

The trick is to get to them as soon as they're set in the yard and get everything you need before the destruction begins....

The 92 300D I got my vented fender from had a mint blue interior that I nabbed except someone screwed up the rear sunshade. I was so pissed because I know those are rare and I wanted it.

Plus I'm sticking with a blue interior so those are hard to come by. I swapped in a crack fre blue dash which is hard to find. I need to reglue my B pillar vinyl on since its coming off and my headliner needs work. Some previous owner removed the sun roof panel and the sun roof doesn't work. I need to get that to work
