Turbo not working on '85 300TD
Hola. The turbo on my '85 300TD (155k) has not functioned for awhile. The car still runs great so it has not been a priority until now.
I hope that someone can give me some steps to take on what items I need to check. Unfortunately, no one around here knows squat about this car, and the dealer just wants to start replacing parts (of course) until they solve an issue. The few indy shops I've tried have often broken more than they've fixed. I have checked all of the visible connections to the turbo and have also confirmed that the impeller spins freely (with my finger). One shade tree mechanic here said that it may have something to do with vacuum...? Anyhow, I have a lot more faith in the posters to this board, and appreciate the replies in advance. Thanks! |

The first thing I would do is remove the sensor bolt from the back of the intake manifold and verify that it's clean. The EGR (which you should disable) has a habit of clogging them up. Next, verify that the overboost valve is not clogged. With the engine not running, you should have clear air flow from the manifold fitting to the banjo fitting on the injection pump.
BE CAREFUL with the plastic lines, they are easily broken.

I had checked the sensor bolt awhile back and it was clean. I'll need to take a look at the line. Thank you.

Is this 85 a Cali car with the Trap Oxidizer? If it gets plugged up, that will make the engine dog down.
You won`t feel the Turbo untill you get up at least 2200 RPM`s. It doesn`t just turn on at that rpm, this where it starts to get up to speed and shoves in enough air to feel the boost. Not only clean the banjo bolt at the rear of the instake manifold, make sure the boost line is open all the way to the switch over valve. and from the SO valve to the ALDA. If that seems ok, try connecting the boost line straight to the ALDA by passing the SO valve, If this improves, then the SO valve is leaking boost. When was the last time you adjusted the valves? The Waste Gate on the Turbo could be blowing off some of the boost if it has a weak spring. How about the fuel filters, air filter. Charlie

Fuel filters changed last year. Air filter changed last week. I adjusted the valves about 6 mos ago (have done that chore twice Will try the suggestions with the lines. Thanks.

How do you know the turbo isn't working? Do you have a boost gage monitoring the intake manifold pressure? If so, have you cleaned the port at the rear of the intake manifold (commonly clogs)? I could never hear mine, so wondered if it worked, but measured 10 psi boost as the engine reaches ~2500 rpm. That was with a temporary gage held against the windshield, but I now have one in the cabin.

We have two threads almost identical, 85 300D Turbo not working.
1985 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel, Turbo not working Charlie

There is a plate at the back of the turbo held on by 4 bolts. You can reach them without having to remove your turbo. There is a plunger which looks like a valve from the cylinder head. There is also an adjusting bolt with a spring. When I first got my first MB, my turbo was "stuck". I removed that plate, took out that valve looking piece, and cleaned out 25+ years of carbon and junk. I adjusted the nut for the boost pressure too. Instead of maybe 1 psi of boost, I got a consistent 10 psi and still had a lot of adjustment left. After that, you could hear it wind up, et cet. I do agree with one of the posts about installing a boost gauge to see what you're getting.

Bill- I used to hear the whine from it when I first got the car, and it used to even chirp the tires shifting into second gear (booyah!). I haven't heard any turbo whistle for a couple years and there is not a noticeable boost in acceleration when floored. As I said, even with the turbo apparently not working, the car runs pretty good but definitely lacks some juice when going up steep hills. Thanks. |
