What are these wires?

Hey all,

I was doing some work behind the instrument cluster on my 83 300sd today, and I noticed these three black wires that go to one metal plug. They were just hanging out, but I figure they need a home somewhere. I can't find anything on the back of the instrument cluster they go to. I pulled off the lower kick panel to have a look underneath, and I can see the three wires come from on top the vent area. I thought they might be a part of the fiber optic lighting, but they do not light up when I reconnect the dimmer and turn the lights on. Any thoughts?

Not familiar with the SD, but that looks like a fiber-optic line. Should go back to a light source, or maybe that is the for the light source...

That brass dohickie makes me think it is fiber lighting. Adrew might be close saying it is where those three get the fiber optic light source. The source, if this is what it is, is the the central Ocotpus. This source Ocotpus is in the center section behind where the buttons are for suff like the sliding roof. It is about 6 inches back and you will see allot of legs on it, I'm not sure why is is where U have found it. I did not know there were fiber optics on Cluster U pulled. The only brass thing like that that I have seen is at the different buttons on the center dash. Purpose of this fiber optics it so allow the operator to find the buttons in the dark. They really don't do much more than that, I don't think.

That's correct.

Great, well thanks for the help! All of the buttons that should be lit up are lit up from what I can tell. I will pull the ccu and see if I can find the other end of these lines purely out of curiosity now. My octopus lights up fine, so these lines must be unplugged from it if they are part of the fiber optic system. I'll let you know what I find after I do a little more digging.
