om60x proper oil level relative to oil pan gasket

Anybody know what the proper oil level is relative to the oil pan gasket? The reason I ask is because I have a modified dipstick tube and I don't have a stock engine setup to compare it to. Thanks.

Oil level

I once did some measurements on my OM603 engine (1987 300D Turbo). The result was the oil level at "full" on the dip stick was 4-1/4 inches above the bottom of the oil pan. I didn't look to see where that was on the oil pan but you can figure it out by looking at your engine. Note that my measurements were "down the tube" so at a bit of an angle.

Ey thanks for that bit of info! That should help!
I have an 0m602 engine... I don't know if the lowest part of my sump is the same as your 603... I'm guessing it probably is. Thanks again!

BTW, your measurement for the length of the dipstick tube... was that measured with it removed from wherever it was bolted on? What I want to try and find out, to try to eliminate any sump depth variations, is to measure via the tube length and at what point it enters the engine block OR sump.

If the pan is stock, put in the correct amount of oil and mark the stick.

I was about to do that, but then the guys who installed the engine went ahead and added the oil. I could take their word for it. But I want to be extra sure. And go that extra step and have another reference point. I can drain the oil and start over... but that's the last resort.

The length was measured with the tube bolted to the engine. The photo was taken with all parts in the same relative position as they would be on the engine. The black measurement thing, BTW, is a length of straightened-out heavy coat hanger wire. I know the tube extends all the way to the bottom of the oil pan (so you can use it to suck the old oil out) but I was surprised the dipstick ended so soon. Thus, the oil is over 4 inches deep in the deepest part of the pan.
