Clunk into reverse: inspect flex disc tranny mount

I am getting a slight clunk going into reverse, and a small vibration if I give it wide open throttle and it kicks down.

Also in neutral when revving it feels as if there is a some swaying going on in the cars mid section

What should I be looking for?

How do I identify a worn flex disc or tranny mount?

On the flex disc, you know it when you see it. A busted flex disc -- especially one that you are noticing from driving the car.

If you don't find anything significant with either of them, check your axles. I had the same symptoms which turned out to be a failing cv joint on the LH axle. After months of going through the driveshaft, I eventually saw oil seeping from the inner boot. There was no evidence of tears or cracks but evidently the rubber has become very thin in one of the folds. With the car elevated, and comparing the LH and RH axles, I noticed the LH side has an "offset" appearance and not a smooth angle like the RH side.

Well I did in fact have the vehicle inspected by my mechanic. They stated the flex disc and transmission mount were in good shape, but LR CV is shot.

They quoted me $515 for parts and labor.

Does this sound right? Is this a DIY job?

HOLY!!!

It is a DIY job and can save you big $$. VSTech may have some rebooted axles for you. You will need new OEM output seals for the diff and a bottle of diff oil.

Check the DIY list for the writeup.

Actually, that is a very reasonable quote if they are using the GKN replacement axle. They usually run >$400 and an hour of labor is pretty close dollar-wise. If they use the chinese-made FEQ or EMPI, then it's pretty steep. I have read many bad reviews, here on this forum, about these $50 knock-offs. Many are replaced within the year.

Also, I'm not sure but you may have the annular axles. If so, you won't have to drain the differential. The annular GKN axles are cheaper as well.

Do you have any bolts around the axle on the pumpkin end of the axle? if so its the annular type. There are pictures floating around the web.

Sounds good.

I messaged VSTech, waiting on a reply.

Anyone else have any suggestion for replacement axles?
