123 series - Old Style cruise control system
anyone want to tell me about it ? how does one fix it up ? if i remember correctly, someone told me that if the "cable puller" is bad, that you need a new one then, and they almost always go bad.....is this true ?
any input is appreciated, one of these days i would like to use my CC, so its time to start figuring out how it ticks... EDIT : and i am right that the "idle speed control knob" somehow works over this CC servo, pulling on the cable a bit to increase idle speed ? i cant see any other way it could work, unless my car has stuff missing from the linkages and cables.....

I think it;s like a lot of older electronics. Caps go bad. The amplifier develops issues with caps or resisters going out of spec over 30 years. There is a guy on here who rebuilds and troubleshoots them. I think Charmlu VS-tech can point you to him.... I know there have been prior threads about this.

The older 10-pin cruise control system uses a vacuum device to pull the cable and thus set the throttle. A lot of times that device will leak and you will not have cruise. What also can occur is your cruise amplifier develops a cold solder joint and/or the capacitors on it fail.
I normally repair the 14-pin units as I've developed a test harness and setup to test and ensure that they work. I have worked on a few 10-pin units (I think 5-6 so far), the only way I have been able to test them is to send them back to their owners and have them install the amplifier. So far each unit has been successful. Since I can't test them I don't ask much money for the repair work vs the 14-pin units. One day I will make a proper test setup for them but I just haven't gotten to them. So if I were you I would first check out the amp, its going to be cheaper to replace/repair than the vacuum servo is. I think a new/replacement servo is >150? Its been a while since I looked.

Idle control is a separate cable and linkage setup from the CC. If you don't see another cable attaching to the linkages inward from the cc cable then you are missing something. Cable and knob assembly is easy to find and/or rebuild. Other pieces that attach, no so easy.

On my 85 Euro TD I went to the Rostra GlobalCruise electric cruise control using the OEM stalk and spedo pick up. Works very nice. Rostra Global Cruise Install Thread

Mercedes Benz issued a TSB (still in effect) between 1981 - 1983 to disconnect them from the throttle linkage. They are notorious for locking at full throttle with no warning, often damaging the engine. Thanks for posting this Roy, first I have heard about this. Our 80 240 has this unit. It will speed up if I hold the lever, but when I let off, it won`t hold.
So with this new but of knowledge, it is going Bye Bye. Charlie

My TD never had cruise so I just installed the spedo pick up and stalk from a parts car and then the Rostra unit.
