Speedometer Drive

In this case I am referring to a 722.120 transmission. Has anyone had to replace this part? Item 584 in the picture, p/n A 115 270 03 27. If so, what else do I need to complete the job properly. Item 589 is a Seal Ring that perhaps goes with the assembly.

So far I haven't been able to find a source for purchase online but haven't called the Classic Center yet.

So the answer for 584 is =>

Have a look at this thread

722.118 Automatic transmission rebuild (Monster DIY)

I've put up loads of pictures in there that should show what you want.

EDIT - sorry I don't think I actually show that bit in the thread...

Once you've got the clamping part for the cable out of the way the rest just follows.

You will get fluid leakage

Stretch,

It would seem to be pretty straight forward once I acquire the parts. In post #28 photo #5 of your referenced thread, you are holding item 588 p/n A 115 274 06 28 which the EPC calls the Case. It appears that item 584 slips in to the hole in the Transmission Case and meshes with a gear in there and is secured by the Seal Ring and then the Case.

Yep that's the bit - here's the picture for others

I was pretty sure when I posted earlier that the next parts just come out. Now I'm not so sure - I'm having a bit of a sweat on!

The drive part you want to replace goes onto the helical plastic cog shown in this picture

I've still got several transmissions in the garage and I have time tomorrow to check for you...

Hello

I believe this is my problem as well could you verify if a similar case has happened to you? I believe i need that exact part (where can I obtain it?)

Copied the follow from my thread
Quote:
About two weeks ago my speed gauge went out while I was driving on the highway, it started to sputter then just lied flat. However the next day on the highway it sputtered to 10mph then promptly died again and hasn't moved since.

This one has me baffled. My speedometer cable and instrument cluster work, we hooked a drill up to the cable end that connect to the trans and the cable went to 25mph. However, when we connect the cable to the transmission the speed needle does not move at all. We believe it to be the part that the speedometer cable connect into, which that then connect into the transmission itself. What is that part called?

It would be like this Speedometer cable + (housing that hold the cable) + transmission

Assault,

Your symptoms are identical to mine. I've found a local dealer that seems to have the part according to their online catalog. I say seems because the part numbers are different from what I see in the EPC. I'm going to call and speak to someone at the dealership tomorrow. Will let you know if I Have indeed found the correct part and what the availability is.

Regards

Phew no stress!

I managed to dig out a spare 722.118 today and see how the speedometer drive comes out.

It IS as I had ORIGINALLY thought - it just comes out in one go.

I think you are better off draining the transmission first you are going to get wet otherwise.

Here's the proof =>

Although this transmission is removed it will sit in the car in this configuration

10mm head bolt holds the part in place

The whole lot came out in one go - I thought so!

I imagine that it could be difficult to check for damage on the internal cog part with the transmission fitted to the car.

If this part is damaged then you need to come and see me again! There are some subtle points you might want to consider.

Thanks Stretch, removal seems pretty straight forward. It also looks like replacing just the gear will mean dis-assembly of the case. Have you ever had that apart? The EPC doesn't indicate the case as 2 pieces but i would think it has to be with the seal ring between the 2 halves.

BTW Assault, Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta has the Speedometer Drive p/n 115 270 03 27 available for order on their web site Genuine Mercedes-Benz Parts and Accessories brought to you by Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta | Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta for $32.50. They do not show the Seal Ring p/n 005 997 52 45 which I think would be nice to have on hand in case the original is worn or damaged during dis-assembly.

...
Do you mean that I took out and had in my hand in this picture?

Yep! It just comes apart - there's a filling bit in the casing that isn't there in the dealer part if I remember correctly...

...and as there's no number for it. Sigh...

If you are talking about the cog inside the transmission then yes I've taken that to bits too - but if you want to get to that you need to make sure you don't mess up the clearances of the gearset - big job.

Yes, the bit in your hand is what I was referring to. Hopefully that is the gear I need to replace and not the cog inside the tranny.

Should have a lift installed in the shop within a few weeks and I will deal with this then. Had enough of laying on my back working on the underside of cars!

We have to think positively on this one!

Thank you for posting a picture of what the part looks like, that will be a major help.
