A/C compressor 300SD

I have researched and searched to no avail, or no luck.

I tried a GM style from auto zone and it would not seal,

so anyone know where i can get a compressor like this? With the flat mounting area and O-ring seal?

notice how the mounting area for the hose block is flush.

The new one I tried looks like this.

And the mounting area is recessed and stepped. It came with colored washer seals and two little spacers that will fit the center of the seal, but will go right into the compressor.

like this

maybe it is me, but i could not make this combination work, and would like to find one like the first pic, at an affordable price?

How to Repair Your A is where i found the first two pics by the way.

btw pouring the oil in on the ground like in that pic did not work for me, as it just runs out in your face when you turn it up to install. I will probably pull a vaccum and use oil in a can through the gauges next time.

To get a compressor with the plain o-ring seals, I suspect that you are going to be restricted to an overhauled unit.

Did you try the green seal on the discharge side and the gold seal on the suction side?

I do not recall the exact color combs. I picked two that made it the most level. problem i had was the move around and just dont seal. Those spacer are small enough they can go into the compr. and they dont fit the line block either. I have heard that there is an adaptor but i could not locate one.

Regardless, I would be fine wiht an overhaul if I knew it had same sealing area.

qwerty is correct, you need those two spacer/o-ring sets in the correct order, and holding them in place is a pain in the butt.
or you have to find some N.O.S. harrison compressor... not likely.
they don't make the flat face any longer. the colored spacers make it flush, and they do work.
compressor works is the best R4 new one to buy.
the sanden kit that's for sale is a better alternative though.

So where do you get the spacers from? I got a new compressor that didn't come with any o'rings or the spacers. It's possible that the spacers are on the compressor on the car now...can I re-use them?

This, hands down.

There is ZERO reason to waste your time dealing with the POS R4 anymore. Go with a Sanden kit...then spend your days driving and enjoying your 617 with a reliable compressor as opposed to pulling your hair out.

Rollguy sells kits as does Klimakit.

The R4 can work fine. I have one on my 1984 300D and a Sanden (w/ RollGuy's brackets) on my 1985. Both cool the same, as best I can tell. I had little faith in the R4 since uncharged when I bought the car, but I charged w/ Duracool and works fine w/ no leaks. If it fails, I have a new R4 I got cheap on ebay (listed for GM, looks same). Your question perked me to go look and it does have recessed ports like your new one.

I imagine GM owners deal w/ the same issue, and it looks like a tractable problem. Perhaps put an O-ring around each seal to keep it centered. On the Sanden, I put a rear head w/ "GM Pad" to use my factory hoses. It has O-ring grooves. I prefer that to the special R4 washer-like seals.

I use PAO 68 oil, which is supposed to stay in the compressor better, which an R4 should appreciate (no sump). It is compatible w/ all refrigerants and doesn't absorb moisture like PAG. You could break the fitting on the suction tube near the compressor and pour the oil down that. You should replace that O-ring anyway.

no to both questions... sorry.

every compressor I purchased came with the spacers.

I suppose they can be bought separately... no idea

I wouldn't think GM would have them, since they are the ones using the stepped manifold... I'd try napa or autozoo...
