Diesel leak

85 300d

Walked outside after a run on the road to find a bit of dripping of diesel

Did not have a change to really check anything as we have a major storm rolling in. Fuel lines and filters looked ok.

Anything to check?

Here a pic, it seems it is running down the tranny and dripping

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk or anything, so don't take it that way, okay? lol But are you sure it's diesel?

Check the lines (yes, I know you gave them a quick check, but sometimes it can be a bit difficult to tell if they are leaking with the gunk these engines can accumulate) especially the hoses that go into the injectors. Don't just check them where the connect. I've had two that rubbed against the little brackets that hold them in the right position and over time developed leaks in the hose itself, not just the connections.

Check the metal lines leading from the fuel injector pump. These are pretty sturdy, but since you're leaking fuel, and they carry fuel, check carefully, especially at the ends where they connect and feel around the little clamps that hold them to eachother...the little rectangle pieces that bolt together. On our '83 240, some numbskull tightened one of those down so tight that it pinched and created a small hole over time.

And you said you looked at the filters, but really feel around them, especially the bottoms. They're just held on there with a clamp and those can wear over time. If it's dripping from the bottom, it would be hard to see.

It would also help you out to have a helper rev the engine (or do it yourself with the linkages at the top of the engine) and watch for any spraying or dripping. These are just a couple common leak spots that I've found over the last few years of doing my own work.

Hope you can track it easily and it's a quick fix!

Yeah, check for the leaks with the engine running. Sometimes, a hose wont leak with no pressure on it; with the engine running, there's usually enough pressure to see it leaking or spraying or whatever.

Doesn't look like a bad leak. Maybe it's just a weeping hose - even a fuel return hose at the back.

one common problem is that the small return lines between each injector develop a "weep". if there is diesel shining on the engine block at the base of an injector or five that is a good suggestion that the return lines need replacement, which is an easy job.

Leaking injector return lines can also go from "dry" to "puddle" in a very short period of time. It's an easy 20 dollar thing to fix.

Return lines

I just did this on our '79, weeping/leaking return lines can leave a pretty good size puddle, and a strong diesel smell. Start with the cheap parts.
