Quick 1979 Muffler Question 300TD

Hi All,

Well, on my way to my inspection my muffler fell off. Perfect.

I didn't pull over on the highway to grab it, as things were moving fast and I didn't feel like risking it all for a muffler.

My plan is to replace the whole exhaust system up to the manifold. For a 1979 I can't seem to find a new rear muffler anywhere. But for a 1980, I can.

I'm guessing these are identical. Any reason to believe they aren't?

Also, anything to be especially careful of in this replacement?

Thanks everyone,

Ben.

If it's a turbo you technically don't need a muffler. If it's NA any old properly sized muffler can do the job.

Judging by the fact that its a '79 you'll need some sort of muffling device. If its only the rear muffler, then just weld up some pipe leading out.

Perfect, thanks guys. It has sounded basically the same without the rear muffler, maybe very slightly louder.

If the rest of the exhaust system weren't already patched up (with some aluminum sheet and hose clamps) I'd definitely opt to just weld on a pipe.

Thanks again,
B

Purchase the downpipe from the dealership (ordered from germany). It is only $50. It goes from the manafold to underneith the car.

Then from there purchase the "ansa" muffler and reasonator
