'93 300D blown head gasket questions.

I am still trying to get get back into a diesel Benz and planning to look at a 93 300D ( Diesel ) about 2.5 hours from me. What I know so far is below ANY forum input on what I may be getting in to would be appreciated. I have no DIY experience with putting an engine back together so this would be handled by one of a couple of local reliable indys I know here. Thanks, Austin

I have seen only pictures so far and may take the drive later this week or over the weekend. This is what I know from little back / forth.

"Can use for parts or machine head and put back together,, rest of car in great condition!! 228,000 miles.
head is on.. cam and everything else is off."

I prefer my cars put together or fully disassembled and neatly tagged when I buy them. I'd find out what let PO to do this and why did he stop. HG is $80 and the tools will run you not much more.

I haven't been able yet to get the owner on a phone call but hope to do this soon. The asking price is right if all it needs is to be put back together.

Will shoot him/ her an email if any cracks on the head were found.
Thanks & any other input also appreciated.

Austin

Wont know about cracks until the head is off. Go in assuming the engine is shot and anything you get on top of that is icing.

Any idea why someone would remove the camshaft first? ( and not the head)

I was thinking blown head gasket, but maybe does this sound more like a snapped timing chain?

* If it was the head gasket any reason to remove the cam?

I'd think the chain snapped... mine did. it's a factory defect on the 93's... soft timing gears eat the chain.
if so, there'd be evidence in the lifter valley of damaged parts.
