I seem to have inadvertently ticked off one of the members here by initially being a little too discreet on the final sale price (in consideration of the seller, who I believe has been a member of this forum, and for whom it was a hard decision to part with a car that was part of his family for almost 30 years). Anyway, I removed my post which seemed to make him dislike me for some reason. Lesson learned, I supposel...
Don't worry about it...you can't please all the people all of the time. I have no issues with someone not wanting to disclose financial information.

Thanks, I'm happy with it, taking care of baselining fluids, addressing inconvenient little problems, getting more familiar with the "old girl".

Thanks Graplr, I appreciate you telling me this. I didn't expect the reaction I got from one individual, in hindsight I should have phrased my response a little differently to prevent giving a wrong impression. Anyway, I've been a member here for many years and hope to continue to benefit from sharing information and advice with nice people who share my passion for these fine cars.
Best regards.

10 seconds

I would have purchased this in 10 seconds. I'd love to have a red one.
I got my black one for 3800 and put a couple grand into it. I love it.
It's very likely going to be the last car I purchase

I agree with Graplr... no need to share the price if you don't want to, although I'm happy to tell you that I paid $600 for mine . I understand that not everybody likes discussing this, although I am by no means that way.

Cheers on updating the signature so fast!

Wouldn't it be nice if this could be my last car too
Though, with our winters here, I likely will always need a second (winter) car. This wagon has survived 30 years (including being shipped across the Atlantic in a container to Europe and back), it would be a shame to sacrifice it to Winter Salt. That's ok, I also own a nice 89 Cressida, which in its own right is a fine car too, and also a survivor.

Well, I paid $3500 for the wagon, and will no doubt spend some money on it (shocks, and maybe try to get the AC going). But at least it looks solid and a good base for building a reliable and practical car. I like the fact that I am already familiar with W123 diesel, having owned a 240D for 13 years. And it's nice to still have the 240D to compare things as I'm getting to know the wagon. Part of me doesn't want to part with the 240D, it's like an old friend, but I can't rationalize keeping 3 cars for myself (plus the Dodge truck to haul the camper)... So it will go once I have the wagon sorted out to my liking.

Tonight, I picked up a nice living room chair someone was throwing out (for my daughter who's moving to a new apartment), so the wagon is already starting to pay for itself!

Thanks again for the good words. It's nice to be joining the "not-so-cheap" wagon club, finally...

"How much?"

Not sure if this is still an active thread, but the "how much" question is a tricky one. Its how and more importantly why people ask.

I have a 1980 300td. I had a 4spd manual swap done. I love that car. I love to drive it, wash it, look at it, and work on it.

When some people ask "How much did you pay?" for this or that you can often tell they are trying to size you up in some weird financial, judgmental way, and that does really irk me. Interestingly, I find those people usually are the types with alot more cash to burn than me.

On the other hand, if someone noticed my car and was interested in it, and wondered how much it would cost to get into and maintain a vintage diesel because they were genuinely enthusiastic about it, they probably couldn't shut me up.

Its all about intent, and if I don't feel like answering the "how much" question I just say: "It was less than a million.....which was a pretty good deal."

Once you've had a wagon for a while, you really miss being able to do stuff like that, once you move on to a sedan again.

My 85 TD came from Vancouver BC and had been owned by a doctor who thankfully took good care of her. It doesn't have the split rear seat or roof rack cross bars but I cant complain as she has a 5 speed manual. I payed 3K.
Its a great highway cruiser but the 240D is more fun to drive on back roads.

Nice TD - you're going to be very happy with it, don't ever sell it, you'll miss it if you do.

Great car for a good price. Nice color too. A good buffing and polishing and it'll look like new. Lucky it's single stage and no clear-coat. I'm envious.

Beutiful car, CONGRATS!

Great looking wagon, I can't believe you got it so cheap. Down by me they are hard to find and everyone wants a million bucks for them.
IMHO, TD's look good in any and every color. Cut that paint with the right compund and wheel and that wagon would make most of us salivate
I will never give up my dream of owning a nice TD.
As far as not being willing (at first) to disclose the price, I think you have every right to do so if you wish. Some people feel they have the right to "RULE" the forums after they 10th post or their second MB because they think they know more that the factory about them
Hope you get to enjoy that red beauty for many years (and miles) to come.
