ugly sound when turning right with 123 300d
my 1980 w123 300turbodiesel automatic makes a nasty hammering sound when i turn to the right. It sounds like its comming from the rear. I thought it had to be something with the drivetrain, but now I've changed both the diff and all the axels going from the tranny to the wheels.
I did notice that the rear gearbox mount is broken, but I cant see how that can be the issue when turning left is no problem. After listening closely, it can seem as if the hammering follows the rpm of the engine, and not the axels. But then again, i changed the motor mounts about 4 months ago. Anybody got any ideas? Anything can help! cheers |

I get the feeling we need more information - but - a broken transmission mount could cause a knocking; but you say hammering as in many knocks? Repeated banging? For how long?
And you say follows engine rpm? Are you sure?

I'd look up a quality Indy and let them test drive it. If they are good, they'll locate the problem very rapidly saving you a lot of time. Offer to pay them for the diagnostics even if you don't use them for the repair.

Yes, Hammering as in many knocks. As you would immagine the sound of an engine with really busted motor mounts, only I think its comming from the rear. the knocking starts as soon as i turn the steeringwheel to the right over the point where the car is no longer going left or straight, but is starting to go right. note: only when the car is moving the noise starts. the noise does not stop until I stop the car, or turn the car to go straight or left again. I thought I'd try and stuff some rubber underneath the busted gearboxmount to try and stimulate a gasket, to see how that works out. But I still dont see why that would not cause a noise when turning left or going straight... hope that makes sense.. |

I would put money on your center driveshaft bearing mount being shot.
Mine is right now and when turning, I can hear the bearing tumble around inside he mount. Once all the rubber of that mount is gone, you may hear it hit the sides of the mount.

Is your exhaust in good shape? Rubber donuts replaced? I know my drive shaft used to rub the exhaust occasionally until I replaced these.
