1981 300SD Turbo permanent Removal Help...
It sounds crazy to want to remove a turbo but my turbo went out on me and I never wanted a turbo'ed Mercedes diesel I always wanted a NON turbo diesel for mileage and simplicity... I was wondering what is needed to do the job right... If I can just plug the oil lines throw on the old non turbo exhaust manifolds and swap out the intake, adjust the valves/timing if that's all or will plugging of the sender line cause damage etc.

Sonds to me like you could just do it like that. I may be wrong, though...

The turbo engined 617 does get better fuel milage than the non turbo models. I have to assume it is just more efficient. A junkyard replacement turbo should be cheap enough.
Anyways the cheapest way to do away it with would be to remove the impelors from the turbo housing. Use a suitable bolt and nut to seal the turbos common shaft hole. That if nothing else should be the cheapest way. |

The cheapest way is to fix it the correct way. When you lose 50% of your power, you'll want that turbo back in a hurry.

The turbo version gets significantly better mileage than the non turbo. My 79 averaged around 23mpg US while my current turbo does 28-30...

Its leaking oil out the shaft housing, and has about 1/8 to a quarter inch play and has tons of oil in the intake. Thanks for the responses...
I was told with the turbo I was loosing mileage im ok with the lack of power its a diesel commuter "Well was" but I was under the impression they got worse mileage.... Also does anyone know of a place or have a diagram or picture of the vacuum system on these... |

Turbo from a pick and pull is your answer.

If the car can still keep up with traffic, your turbo is producing boost.
I can assure you that driving an S-Class with no turbo would be like trying to climb a 20 percent grade on a riding mower, towing 1000 lbs behind you. Without a turbo that car cannot get out of its own way, away from a stoplight. It would not be livable.

Thank you all who responded I don't like the idea of loosing mileage and total efficiency so Pick-N-Pull it is...

Check for bearing play before removing. Chances are very good the car you are removing it from was not scrapped because of a bad turbo. With a little luck you may be able to check a couple of them out first at the yard.

Don't the Turbo 617s have lower compression pistons than the non turbo cars? So without the turbo you'd be below the 90HP or whatever the 617NA made. An 80HP W126 sounds like a distinct lack of fun.
I've got a turbo on the shelf from a W116 300SD, if the experts can confirm it fits your car I'd sell it to you cheap. My 123 turbo has a good turbo on it, so its just sitting on the shelf.

I don't think the turbo motors have much if any difference in compression ratio.
as to the OP question, the injectors would need to be re popped to lower pressure, as the NA uses 115bar, and the T uses 135bar, the rear gear ratio would need to be changed, or the car would barely move on the highway, and THAT is the reason you'd lower the economy.
