1986 300SDL with leaky front calipers
 

My car has developed a leak in at least one of the front calipers--haven't inspected the other caliper yet; one is enough to warrant repairs to both.

On my 85 300D I upgraded the front brakes to the 1st gen W126 brakes (calipers, rotors), replaced the bearings, new pads, etc. On this car I need to save a bit of money if possible.

Question #1: Has anyone successfully performed a caliper rebuild on this type of caliper? I have read that if you just have leaky calipers that a new seal kit may be all you need to do. Are there any special tools/techniques required?

Question #2: I have been reading here that dealing with brake bleeding issues is complicated when ABS is involved, which it will be on this car. The caliper started leaking badly while I was on my way home; by the time I got home the front brake reservoir was dry. So there's bound to be air in the system now. Are there solutions to this bleeding issue that will not be big $$s?

FWIW, (in my experience) caliper issues seem to sneak up on you over time, not be a catastrophic as you describe. Go in and inspect, but I'd guess maybe a brake line blew.

As in calipers/brakes, if this is the case, replace both. If one's gone, the other is prolly right behind it....

Bleeding with ABS is not a problem at all. One thing though. Go ahead and replace the brake lines as well. I believe they are supposed to be replaced every 2 years ? Also when installing them make sure there are no kinks. There is always a reference line ( white or dotted white line) it should be as straight as possible.
