nice, the dealership parts counter allowed me to email in my reg and license so they can order a replacement.

has anyone tried drilling a keyring hole in the small stub end of the steel part of the key? it's a little harder to handle on its own but maybe not so bad that i feel the need to seek out another solution.

I think the replacement heads work fine, If you are turning from the end of the head it will rip apart in short order. I always turn from the base of the key head

Twisting the key from the outer edges puts more stress on the plastic so that isn't the thing to do.

Grab the key close to the dash and spread the load across the key. Use your thumb on the left side in the direction of rotation and use your index finger pointing down across the entire key, put most of the index finger pressure at the finger tip. Squeeze slightly and turn.

Picture a key head that was falling apart ( or was missing the head completely) and do what you would to keep it together. In other words if you turned it like the head was gone you are putting the least stress on the head.

^^ exactly the way I twist the key with my sausage fingers, I noticed that I literally grab the whole key head.

The new plastic head are really crappy. The key used to be molded into the head, and now it's an insert style, and they tear really easily. A wood key head will hold up WAAAAY longer and looks way better too. Here is my DIY for making your own wood key head. I've make well over 20 of these for forum members over the past few years and never had anyone have issues with them breaking. I've had mine for several years now and still holding up great. If you're not up for the task yourself, I'm happy to make you one, and I've been asking $25 for one, or $40 for a pair.

i am considering having the key stub welded to a washer, though i can operate it without the plastic part without too much trouble.

taking the plastic cover off reveals what i think is the key code - two capital letters. let's say for the sake of the discussion that my code is FU. does only mercedes know how to map that onto the ten four-position tumblers (1 million possible permutations) or is this an open secret to others who manufacture keys?

I highly doubt that those two letters have anything to do with the shape of the key. There is no way two letters could reveal the all the different options for key shape. I've never noticed any letters on the 25 or 30 keys that I've made for forum members, but I've never looked that closely for letters. How big are they? I would venture a guess that they'd be more for the type of key blank and not the key shape, but that's just a guess.

Are the double cut S-Class keys different? I got 2 new keys from the dealer a year and a half ago, and they were just like the originals and are holding up great

I do always turn the key from the base.

My w126 key I got 2 years ago is holding up fine as well. I have tough mitts as well and it's doing fine.

just wondering, if the user greases up the key head with dirty repair hands, the oils may eat the plastic.

Biodiesel300TD, just because there are a million possible variations in the key shape doesn't mean mercedes used that many. i believe that two alphabet characters (26^2=676) is a normal way to encode key variations. six hundred different key patterns is enough to make it horribly unlikely that your key will unlock the wrong car.

I didn't know that the dealer would replace the key for free. It has happened to 3 keys that I have purchased. Thx.

the only key that comes from the dealer with the hollow assembly is the key for the 123... btw, if you order the ROUND 123 valet key, you get a solid head.
