I'm doing this job right now. My situation is a bit different as mine is going in a race-only truck behind a '84 Diesel from 300SD (OM617 engine).

There are several ways to do this:

Bentsen's makes an adaptor to allow a GM trans (manual or automatic) to bolt in behind a 616 (4 cylinder) or OM617 (5 cylinder) M-B Diesel. The kit's under $800 but you still need to find a shifter, clutch actuation system (linkage, hydraulic clutch system, etc), and a speedo drive - you didn't give the year of your car but it may have an electronic speedo.

OR -

Find a 300 and get the whole shootin' match. The trouble here is that they are scarce as hen's teeth and therefore EXPENSIVE. Probably the most straighforward method but you still need to transfer the pedal set AND the brake master as the clutch master uses the brake resevoiur.

OR -

Find a 240D with a manual. This only gets you a 4 speed (no overdrive gear) but provides some of solutions you need. Again, get the shifter and pedal set along with the brake master. You might have the issues with the speedo drive. This is the method I'm using and my 240D ('82) has a mechanical speedo as I suspect they all do - the 300 SD ('84) had an electronic speedo but in my case it's no concern.

This can, of course, be done but it isn't an easy or simple undertaking.

If you are staying with the MB Transmission, then the most readily available Trans would be is one from a 240D. these show up in the PNP`s quite often.
You will need the Transmission, Shift Rods, Shifter, FW, 240D automatic Trans X-Mount, 240D front section of the DL, ( this will have to be cut down about 4" and rewelded and balanced) Peddle assy, I would recommend a new Clutch Disc, PP, Release Bearing, Pilot Bearing, and master Cylinder.

There is the 5-spd with the OD but was only sold in Europe. You could luck out and find a Grey Market car brought over here. I recently saw 3 on CL in the SF Bay Area. or if you poke around in the PNP`s you eventually might find one, along with the elusive 671 38# FW.

It really isn`t all that difficult to do the swap, it is pretty much plug and play, do a search of the swap and there is a ton of info on the subject.

Now if you are really industrious, you could modify a W201 5-spd to work in a W123.

How to adapt a W201 5-speed to OM616/OM617 applications

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/auto

Anyone that thinks a 240D is slow drives too fast.
