My Hitch
W123 Wagon Euro Bumper Project
This was my modification for adapting a truly euro hitch to my 5 mph federal bumpers. And here is what it looks like when I bought it. It works for me now.

and they all have a manufacturer logo that looks like 'ORIS' near a Mercedes star and 123 part number stamped into the steel. So I think mine may be a Mercedes factory hitch. Unfotunately, there doesn't appaear to be any easy way to use this hitch design with the US bumper-shocks. Happy Motoring, Mark

To add to the hitch/tow-bar confusion...
A 280TE W123 has a different rear mounting to the W123 300TD. (Euro car) These cars are both the same age and both are W123 wagons. The 300TD exhaust will not fit with the original 280TE tow-hitch brackets in place--the large round diameter of the rear box is blocked by the transverse bar of the hitch where it runs beneath the 'egg-crate' vacuum reservoir, between the chassis rails... So--two days ago, I had to remove the tow-bar complete to fit the 300TD exhaust to the now converted 280TE into 300TD car What a PITA!

On what I presume to be my factory Euro hitch, no part of the hitch assembly interferes with the exhaust, fuel-tank or vacuum reservoir.
The entire external visible cross-tube basically fits inside the bumper. The only part that dips below the bumper is the bottom of the U-shaped piece that the ball is welded to. The U then curves upward, placing the ball-height exactly in-line with the Euro bumper. All the frame reinforcements go inside the cargo-floor and inside the frame-rails. The access holes from the rear valence into the frame rails on my Euro TD appear to be factory too. Though it probably wouldn't be too difficult to cut some holes into a Euro W123 that doesn't have them, in order to use this particular style hitch.
