OM617 flexplate/flywheel weight?

Does anyone know what a OM617.951 (turbo'd motor out of '83 300sd) flexplate or flywheel weighs? I'm trying to determine the best weight of flywheel to run with my custom 5 speed manual. Not sure if this motor came with a manual ever, but if it did, does anyone know how much that flywheel weighed and if it was neutral balanced?

Thank you

Think the flywheel with a manual transmission on the non turbo five cylinder was 38 pounds. Anyways whatever it was should be good for the turbo version of the same engine.

The 240d flywheel is usable but a little light in comparison by about ten pounds less I think.

Before removing anything mark it's location so you can get the new one match balanced. If it's already apart make sure the new flywheel is neutral balanced

Thank you very much! Sounds like the 35lb clutch for my W56 Toyota transmission will be the best option.

@Simple=Better - I wish that I had known that before. But everything ended up getting neutral balanced and will get neutral balanced this time around, as well.

The 38# is for the flywheel alone.

Joe I don't know where you got your adapter from but I ordered a kit from Luke at 4x4labs and his advice to me about balance matching was that with a manual Trans assembly the amount that where balanced on the factory motors is negligable and another case of over engineering.

Also got mine from Luke. That's not true. It would definitely have been best to mark mine and get my flywheel match balanced (I just didn't know). I have terrible vibrations at 2800-3000 RPM with my stock 20 pound flywheel. I'm hoping the 35# flywheel fixes it. Even the giant flywheels on our large square balers at AGCO are balanced down to a few grams. Google image search one.

EDIT** Does anyone know if the flywheel to crankshaft bolts can be reused safely? Roy strongly advised against it, but I don't have $100 for a few simple bolts and I just replaced them a year ago.

Absolutely buy new bolts. They stretch and can only be used once. $100 is better than absolute destruction.

In the FSM many of the bolts in a MB engine are reusable if you measure the neck thickness. I am not sure if flywheel bolts are included in this category.

The fellow who said not to worry about the balancing is wrong. The FSM says to match balance for a reason. Ignore it at your peril. In my experience four of the five I have had apart were neutral, one was balanced with the crank. So, the odds are they are neutral...do you feel lucky?

The price paid is high if you are not lucky. A crank balanced using the flywheel left unmarked and the flywheel discarded will require a tear down of the motor to correct. If the original flywheel is available then a removal of the transmission, FW and clutch is required plus the match balancing which you could have done in the first place.

There are witness marks when the flywheel and crank are balanced together but they are really hard to find and see so I recommend marking the fw and crank before removal. You have 12 positions to mount the crank and potentially 11 are wrong.
