Hopefully it's a legit diesel engine & will be a great car, but the video sounded like a recap of what GM did in the early 80's with their 350 gas to diesel conversions....and we all know how well that went.
Gas to diesel conversions can work. It's not very well known but International Harvester built the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI motors from their MV-series of gasoline engines. You might be familiar with these diesels from Ford trucks prior to the Powerstroke branded diesels. Of course, you can't really accuse IH of underbuilding their gasoline motors. What they were calling a small block v8 (SV-series), such as the 266ci would dwarf the Olds rocket-based diesel in physical size.

Now what worries me about the low-comp Skyactiv diesel is what happens as the motor ages and the rings wear down. I mean if it's running right at the edge of autoignition, what happens 100,000 miles down the road when it can't squeeze the fuel quite as hard?

Yes, I've seen that vacuum nightmare.

I can't even keep my door locks working reliably. I hope Mazda has a better solution for the Skyactiv than they did for the turbo FD.
