Exciting innovation...

This looks interesting. 14:1 compression and no urea injection. A diesel with Japanese reliability - could be a good combination.

If Mazda brings that diesel Wagon to canada I am buying it, no questions.

Reminds me of GM's gas conversions....

Lower compression, lighter materials, blah, blah, blah....to me it seems to scream "Hey! We converted a gas engine into a diesel!"

Hopefully it's a legit diesel engine & will be a great car, but the video sounded like a recap of what GM did in the early 80's with their 350 gas to diesel conversions....and we all know how well that went.

Mazda does have some experience with diesels though. Back in the 80's they used to put diesel in 626's and some of their pickups, so hopefully it'll be a great ride. But I still couldn't deny all the similarities of their new engine to those old GM oil burners.

Canada, cold, 14:1 compression??? Hope it comes fitted with a block heater.

I think Mazda are using some of the same parts in a petrol engine.

t walgamuth 05-10-2013 06:33 AM

Mercedes has always used a lot of the same parts in gas and diesel engines, including blocks and cranks. the problem with GM was they did not build a quality engine even though they knew how to do so, having built Detroit diesels for decades.

TheDon 05-10-2013 09:11 AM

This Mazda engine is a completely new engine, designed as a diesel.

I can't wait until its out an the Cruze diesel so I can test them both out. The Mazda will be offered with a 6 speed manual and the Cruze, only an automatic

TheDon 05-10-2013 09:12 AM

What would be awesome is the diesel in their wagon or the Mazda Speed 3 or whatever it is

Stretch 05-10-2013 09:15 AM

Sorry folks I didn't make myself clear.

The petrol engine version of this diesel one has a very similar compression ratio =>

Seems interesting. I recently bought a 2013 TDI Sportwagen. CDI engines are amazing. Unsure about how all that complexity is going to pan out in the long run though. So far so good, wife drives mostly city, been averaging almost 34mpg with the 6 speed manual. Its pretty fun to drive too. Not as spacious as our older boxy MB's tho. I'll stick with my W126's and W201. :) We traded the 300E in on it as it was just to beat to be worth saving.
