factory service manual

I saw a used manual on the bay that covers the 615, 616, and 617.19 and is copyrighted 1982. will this have only info for the w123 diesels or are there other chassis this might cover?

Those engines were only used in the 123 and earlier models. 617 was also used in the first gen 126 (S-class). End of production was approximately 1985. Anything newer will be a 124 chassis or second gen 126 with OM60x engines.

The 126 chassis started out based on the 123 (1979 iirc). When they introduced the 124 in 1985, they copied a lot of the 124 features over to the second gen 126, but kept calling it a 126, even though there is not very much in common between a pre-1985 and a post-1986 126..

so are you saying that if I'm driving a 1982 240D then the manual i mentioned will probably do it for me? I've got a digital manual but it's kind of a fuss to have the laptop out getting greasy while working on the car

This manual will totally work out for you. Where did you find it? eBay?

I am not sure I understand this question. The Engine Manual only covers the Engines. (None of the Engines you listed are Engines with Turbochargers.)

The W123 Body and Chassis Manual is usually a set of 2 Manuals with the exception that the early W123 Manual is a single one.

The Climate Control Manual is separate.

While the Body And Chassis Manuals have the Wiring Diagram the Electrical Troubleshooting Guide is Separate.

There is some other separate Manuals but I don't remember them.

None of the English Versions have any Transmission or Turbocharger Rebuilding information.

You will get more bang for your Buck if you aquire the CD Manual Set. Although it is a pain to use on My Windows & 64bit. It ran OK on My old XP 32 Bit Home.

Some Members have been saying that if you register the Startek you can access the Manuals online for free. I have not done that so I cannot comment on that.

Mercedes Startek was selling the Manuals on CD or DVD depeing on the year and model.

You don't need to register. For a few manuals (W123 W201 W124 and R107) they've made available for free.

@Vsamboyellowsub => As you already have a digital manual I'd just print out the chapters as you need them and then keep the pages in a ring binder

As Stretch mentioned, print the pages you need for the repair work. If they get greasy, so what.

A paper manual is best to look at, and faster to find what I want than a CD. I wouldn`t use the Paper Manuals when working on the vehicle, as I don`t want mine greasy and messed up.

Paper manuals are getting harder to find all the time.

It is just that the Manuals on CD that several years ago were a total cost of $27 cover nearly the complete Car and also gassers that use the same Chassis. So it is a good value for the Dollars.

Unfortunatly the one I have is not compatiable with the 64 bit Windows 7, but worked on the old Windows XP.
I can get it to work on Windows 7 but when I close out a page it closes down and I need to start from the begining. This is a PITA if you don't pick the correct section you want the first time.

Yes but in principle you can get all of that for free online.

Everyone has their own way of doing things. When I think I even might need something I don't like to be without it. I try to aquire those items.
As an example I have one new Timing Chain and 2 of the Timing Chain Crimping Tools. My single Mercedes does not need a New Timing Chain.
On the surface that seems wasteful but I look at it as an investment.

Some People buy Lottery Tickets. Instead of that I buy stuff that I think will help ease My way through life; especially when it might help Me with some problem.

I simply that I don't not like depending on Others or resources that I do not have control over.

I don't know about others but I occassieonaly have trouble with My Internet connection.

Last week I tried to dial up and got some error code 788 or 768; I wrote it down but lost the Paper so I cannot say exactly what the issue was. The result was I could not get on the Internet.

The week before that I had one occurance of a 6 somethine error code come up with the same results.

If I had needed the online Manual I would have been out of luck during that time.

Also last Month We had a Power Failure that lasted over 6 hours (this is unusual) I have no Battery Back up for My Desktop Computer but could use My weak batteried Laptop to access the CDs If I had to.

I also have the Printed Manuals and there is a few things in the Printed Manual that are not in the CD.

keep in mind, the online manuals are MUCH clearer than the CD copies...

nothing beats the paper originals of course, but the online stuff displays perfectly on tablets.

I agree, I use the tablet for simple or clean jobs (like working on the interior).

If it is going to be a dirty job, best bet is to print it out and put it in a sheet protector. I would really hate to get my iPad dirty or worse break it.

I understand that - and I think your not very reliable internet connection is going to be legendary! When it is working you could download the PDF files and save them on your hard drive for future reference; then you'll not be dependent on either your internet connection or that stupid antiquated flash software that's on the old CD. If you were really clever you could extract the PDF files from the CD but I guess that's something that's not for mere mortals.
