Plug oil pressure line at filter

Hi, couldn't find specifics by searching. I have 81 240d with oil oozing from bottom of instrument cluster, so probably need to pull cluster and examine, but until then, as a band aid, I wish to plug the line at the filter.

Does anyone know what size bolt to use to do that? any info in this regard appreciated.

What filter are you talking about exactly? I don't have a W123, mine is electronic, but as far as I know (and this is the case in my Toyota Pickup) the speedometer uses motor oilto lubricate the cable' if you plug it you will have a non-working speedometer...

The cable is not lubed by engine oil nor is the speedo. He's referring to the oil filter canister where the oil pressure line to the gauge runes from.

As for the bolt size I have no idea...

Oh! I had no idea that on that model the oil pressure was given from oil coming directly from the cannister... my bad.

The Oil Pressure Line at the Oil Filter does not seal on the threads of the Fitting. It seals on a cone shaped tip not unlike the Fuel Injection Hard Lines.

While it might be possible to use sealant on the Bolt Thread I would not bottom out the Bolt and tighten it really hard as it could ruin the seat for the Nromal Oil Pressure Line.

I don't know this for a fact but I found this in My Notes: Oil Pressure Gauge adapter fittingMplafleur in this post says the 300SDL has a 12mm by 1.5 twist on it

In any event once the Oil Pressure Line is out you can take it to the Hardwear Store and run a Nut over the threaded end to find out what size it is.

The easiest way I believe is to get an electronic sender from an SD at the junk yard and use that as a plug. I'm almost positive they use the same sealing configuration.

Correct. The seal is with the crush washer against the face of the sender or bolt head.

I would use an electric sender. I actually converted my 2.2 diesel to electric oil pressure readings when I swapped it into my '93 chassis. Works great, and no leaky line to worry about.

The Electric Sending Unit is a good idea. I have cut off the oil line from a junker at the Oil Filter housing, leaving a couple inches of plastic line, and heating it and mashing the melted soft ends together. I have done this mostly to keep the hole filled when I pressure wash a PNP engine. so should work for your temporary plug.

There is about 100lbs of oil pressure so keep that in mind.

"I have 81 240d." The 240D is setup for a Mechanical Gauge. The Plate at the Bottom Rear of the Oil Filter is different from the one with the Electrical Sending Unit and the Oil Pressure line seals differently from the Electrical Sending Unit.
