Replacing hood hinge in a 123 without removing the fender DIY

I needed to replace or repair the hood hinge, but did not want to pull the fender. The bushing that is welded into the body just behind the battery was rusted to the hinge shaft (common problem). I removed the two bolts and rested the corner of the hood on a urethane rubber washer. I also had a strap holding the hood vertical. I used a 13mm ratcheting wrench (Harbor Freight) to remove the bolt inside under the cowl. By putting pressure on the wrench with my thumb and middle finger, I was able to ratchet the bolt all the way out to the end.

After completely removing the hinge, I tried using a torch to heat the bushing enough to remove it from the shaft. I eventually gave up, as I had a spare hinge available. Maybe more heat for a longer time would have helped.

After installing the good hinge (a little more tricky but successful), I found a washer bigger than the square hole in the body, and installed the clip.

A little fine adjustment and placing the spring in the proper spot, the hood opens and closes great!

I think you just saved my sanity.

I've got some old busted hood hinges that I've not been able to get out with kerosene and hand grenades.

I'll try this and bless you if it works.
