exhaust donuts
Just driving around last week and started dragging the exhaust system.
A look underneath and found the 4 heavy O Rings that held the muffler on were all cracked. Found a ball of twine in the trunk and lashed it back in place. Were there more than these 4 donuts holding the exhaust system up in the back?

When I see cracks in mine, I replace them from my local PNP from newer 90's models as they still have many years of use ahead. Mine has 3 that I can see...

Yes two at the front and two at the rear of the muffler.

Bailing twine is good for a couple if years. You have plenty of time to get new ones. I was once bored & cut a couple out of a old tire side wall. That was 19 years ago. They have not failed yet.

Replace them with genuine MBZ.
Then add a zip tie on the back (2) near the muffler for 'insurance' or use the trick ones with chain in the center at the very back...

The plain O's are kinda weak. They break all the time on me. I've gotten to using the reinforced ones - the ones with the crossbar that makes the O look like a greek letter THETA. They last a bit longer. I always carry spares too.

Going to echo the remarks on the 'plain' ones, the reinforced are much more durable (if somewhat harder to get on).
Also if you have had any exhaust work done and the muffler isn't quite straight or exactly in its original spot, the plain ones seem to wear out really fast from the extra strain.

The biggest thing that helped me with this was to bend the tabs on the exhaust system to where it was snug against the rubber bumpers. This eliminated the "swinging" of the exhaust and the hangers have lasted significantly longer. I haven't changed hangers in about 5 years now.

Well that didn't last long. The other day I was greeted with the same thing, dragging exhaust. Got it c
fixed with some wire for now.

This is the one I use:
1985 Mercedes-Benz 300D Base Sedan - Exhaust Gaskets, Hardware, and Miscellaneous - Page 1 At least one of these will keep your muffler from ever dragging.

Ah yes I went from the old donuts to twine to new donuts. Months later I am back to electric fence wire. No more donuts for me.
