I've been using the Amsoil Marine Diesel 15W40 in the 300DT for over twenty years. I'm about to reinstall the bypass oil filter system into the oil cooler lines....this helps to keep the oil cleaner than relying solely on the cartridge oil filter. It is an amazing oil....as far as the Amsoil European motor oil, tried it but the 560SEL began to develop lifter noise so I switched to an oil with higher ZDDP levels. After I repair an oil leak in the 560SEL, I am going to switch to Amsoil Premium Synthetic oil which has a higher level of ZDDP which should alleviate any problems.

Would you mind posting some details on the bypass system when you get there? What do you see as benefits, etc.?

i have been an AMSOIL guy for a very long time......have been using their oil in my Benz diesels for over 12 years and combined 300k miles, and any cars i work on for people get AMSOIL as well....nothing but good reports......u buy as a preferred customer to get the wholesale prices, which are as follows
CJ-4 spec oil, 5/w40, for the new powerstroke typed trucks 7.80 per quart Series 3000 SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil, for long drains, i run this oil for 15k miles, changing filters at 5,000 miles.......their "top tier" product for the type of old diesels we have.....8.60 a quart the 15/w40 HD Marine formula is 7.10 the Full SAPS Formula European Car Formula 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil is 5.70 per quart, is specially designed with the properties required by european high performance motors, both diesel and gas......this is what i use now, at 7,500 mile intervals......havent done the long drain Series 3000 for a few changes now...... the OE series 15W-40 Synthetic Diesel Oil is 5.25 per quart, and is the "direct competition, if u will, to any of your major-brand diesel oils, synthetic or otherwise......very good price imho.......i still use the Euro 5/w40 anyways now, as its a bit more per quart, but is specificly designed for motors that run hot and hard all day, as european cars are geared to...... so anywhere u see them charge more than these prices, its their profit, not AMSOIL's fault......its actually a very price-competitive oil to run, and they have specific formula's for just about everything that needs lubrication.....

and before you ask, "whats the difference then between one of their 40-weight diesel oils or the other, exactly ? its all in the formulations, manipulating the properties of the lubricant according to requirements of the application........for example here's the specs on 2 separate formula's, the European Gas/Diesel Oil, and the regular OE Series Diesel Oil......u can see the differences......
TYPICAL TECHNICAL PROPERTIES European Car Formula 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil (EFM) Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D 445) 13.6 Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D 445) 83.3 Viscosity Index (ASTM D 2270) 168 CCS Viscosity, cP @ °C (ASTM D 5293) 5433 (-30) Pour Point °C (°F) (ASTM D 97) -39 (-38) Flash Point °C (°F) (ASTM D 92) 220 (428) Fire Point °C (°F) (ASTM D 92) 238 (460) Noack Volatility, % weight loss (g/100g) (ASTM D 5800) 8.7 Four Ball Wear Test (ASTM D 4172B @ 40 kg, 75°C, 1200 rpm, 1 hr), Scar, mm 0.47 Total Base Number 10.1 High-Temperature/High-Shear Viscosity 150°C, 1.4 x 1.0 x 106 s-1, cP (ASTM D 5481) 3.7 TYPICAL TECHNICAL PROPERTIES AMSOIL OE 15W-40 Synthetic Diesel Oil (OED) Four-Ball Wear Test @ 40 kg, 75°C, 1200 rpm, 1 hour; scar diameter, mm (ASTM-D4172) 0.53 Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 14.5 Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 101.3 Viscosity Index (ASTM D-2270) 147 CCS Viscosity @ -20°C, cP (ASTM D-5293) <5500 Flash Point °C (°F) (ASTM D-92) 230 (446) Fire Point °C (°F) (ASTM D-92) 248 (478) Pour Point °C (°F) (ASTM D-97) -38 (-36) NOACK Volatility, % weight loss (g/100g) (ASTM D-5800) <8.0 Total Base Number (ASTM D-2896) 9.0 High-Temperature/High-Shear Viscosity, cP (ASTM D-5481) 4.3 as you can see, the euro spec formula has better qualities all around, including wear protection, while having a lower kinematic viscosity, meaning it does everything it needs to do as an oil better, while flowing easier (in comparison to the OE Formula), however the OE Formula is slightly less volatile (in layman's terms, it "cooks off" or evaporates) slightly less in prolonged use, which is appropriate for it being designed for large heavy duty lowspeed diesels that run 24/7......
