Cant source OM617 Timing Chain Tensioner? Help?

Pelican lists the part number 617-050-02-11 as the Febi number for the correct timing chain tensioner for a turbo om617 engine. They are out of stock and listed for $60. Ive managed to find a few floating around ranging from $100-$140. Are these discontinued or something that the price is going up and they are out of stock?

I recently purchased a tensioner that was suppose to fit. Listed as fitting 80-81 300td models but had different piston dimensions when it arrived but after some research appeared to be a non turbo model tensioner.

Does anyone have some insight on the subject? Id rather not pay twice the price for a part if I dont have to.

Why get the whole thing?

I've only ever seen the non turbo one (which is oil filled and not at all appropriate for the turbo version) but looking on the Russian EPC you can see that the turbo version just has a spring in there

So why get the whole thing? Why not get a spring?

Is that a possibility?

Well the tensioner I had was a very similar body but a different piston. It was much shorter than my stock one and I did not want to risk having an issue. I already sent it back to the seller and luckily got my money back as he had listed incorrectly as fitting turbo models.

I guess Im just going to spring to spend the $100 so I know I have the right part...

Yes but what's wrong with the old one?

Or is it missing?

Ahhh

Well there are lots of people here who might be able to help out with a second hand part - might not be the best thing to buy second hand though. But if cost is an issue...

...and if you still have the other parts within the casing you could make a good one.

The piston end didnt seem to be in such great shape either with is why I'm just going to spring for a new one. Its not that I cant swing one its just that it sucks seeing that something should cost $50-$60 and only finding it for $100+

I know the feeling but in the end you end up loosing out on time as well. It all comes down to timing; sometimes the stock you want isn't around when you need it.

If it makes you feel any better the dealer part is about $300 and stuff from Febi is often junk...

Awesome timing chain and chain tensioner puns!
"I'm just going to spring for a new one"

Well I have an offer into a guy for a full MB timing set for the motor right now. We'll see how that plays out. If not theres another guy on ebay with a "WD" brand tensioner for $100.

I got the tensioner from the dealer, using p/n 617-050-02-11. Apparently some stores sell 617-050-01-11 (Febi), at least from what I've seen.

Comes with a gasket too:

You need to get the spring separately

In place

Yep the non-turbo tensioners are designed differently, with the turbo models having a separate spring. Good read:

If you look back at that EPC picture I posted you can see that there are two housings on offer with two different springs. Perhaps the FSM has more information regarding what's what?

Removal is straight forward - the non turbo tensionsers need to be pre-filled with oil - the turbo ones need to be re-set (I think) much like the M102 petrol engines. I managed to snap my M102 camshaft by not re-setting the tensioner. Now that was an expensive mistake.

Best advice I can give is to read the procedure in the FSM - and then read it again to make sure you fully understand!
