I feel like I am missing something...

I was underneath my 240d this weekend and noticed a hole...

Looks like it's between the engine and transmission, exposed flywheel. Is there a cover that's supposed to go here? I noticed some loose bolts too.

I feel like I am missing something...-imageuploadedbytapatalk1369139153.409399.jpg

there is a steel cover plate held on by those screws, you are definitely missing it.

Chances are someone did transmission work and forgot to reinstall it and it was lost in the sands of time

Thanks, Thought so... There are many things the PO never finished on this car.. *sigh*..

Is there a part number for this thing?

I wonder if this is something I could just make myself or if it needs to be precise and water tight

its really just a dust cover to keep crap out of the bellhousing, it has a little piece of weatherstrip on the top to seal to the oil pan, but seems to me that it will probably work without that weather strip, certainly better than nothing.
You could easily bust one out out of some sheet stock. Not sure of the part number, someone may chime in.

here is what it looks like, flat with a 90 degree bend on the top. Personally I don't think you even need that 90 degree bend if you want to make a completely flat one

I wouldn't bother with the bend actually, Id just take some extra fuel line and slit it down one side, and slip it over the flat end of my new cover plate to make a rubber bumper. the effect will probably be the same

Ironically the above pic is the one from my car which I should have reinstalled a year ago.
The PO may not really be at fault or have no idea it was missing. This is one of those bits that mechanics are always losing if they are sloppy or in a hurry combined with sloppy, like centercaps for wheels.

Hmm, doesn't look too hard to make at all. On the bright side, at least the hardware is there haha

well it's been some time but I made a stencil by taking a receipt from the floor and marking the edges using my dirty finger and winging it
