testing spare parts

I have a bunch of extra window motors and antennae, but i have no idea if they still work. trouble is, my car is set up for manual windows, so there's no way to check the motors. is there any way to check them for functionality without them being in the car?

For the Window Motors; their bodies are not grounded as part of the Electrical Circuit like the Starter Motor is.

You apply + Voltage to One Wire and negative Voltage to the other and the Widow Motor will turn one direction. Swapping the Wires to different Terminals on the Battery causes the Motor to turn in the opposite direction.

Portable start box

I routinely use my starting box as a 12vdc source for testing componenets.

Well, I use a Makita 14.4V drill Battery and a set of HF Digital Volt meter leads, cut off the ends and soldered on some flat spades to match the Battery connections.

Easy to use and take to the yards to test parts before removing them.

X2

This is usually the easiest most portable way to do it.

All the above is great information but don't take the test as a guarantee that the motor is good. I have seen 100's of motors that would run fine on the bench but not run under load. In most cases it is the brushes are worn out. Usually these motors can be tapped with a hammer (makes the brushes touch again) and they will work again for a few times. Also, most auto window motors have a self resetting circuit breaker built in. They can also cause the problem of not working sometimes and the tap of a hammer will get them working again.
I'm sorry, but the only real test is to install them and see how they work. If they work for at least 20 or so ups and downs they they are good.

TIP: If you have a window go down fine and a rain storm comes up but the window won't go up, try this. With the ign on, open the door with the bad window. Hold the window switch in the up position and slam the door as hard as you can. Some times the jar will make the motor work one more time. DON'T put the window down again until the motor has been replaced.
