Loose rubber strip on rear bumper 85 300D
What's caused the rubber strip to come off? Is this a common occurrence? What's the best way to fix? Thanks!

You have to take the whole strip off to get those little clips to slide back into their holes on the metal part of the bumper. And you need to pull the strip out off the rubber side pieces, too. A PITA for sure, I sprayed some silicon lube on the strip to make it easier to slide into the grooves which you'll see once the strip is off. Easy to figure out once you get into it! I just did my front one, and the back one needs it too, just not that into it yet!

After removing the 2x 10 mm bolts from inside the trunk, there are 2x 8 mm bolts under the bumper that must be removed in order to remove the bumper corner support metal bracket. I tried your method of bending the bumper strip starting from the middle and found it takes a lot of effort. After sweating a lot (it was 90F) and still wasn't able to get the strip on right I gave up and used Windex for lube and a mallet and pounded it into place in less than 2 minutes w/o much effort. The 2 plastic strips had some big gaps which I know will show after the bumper strip is installed so I used about 5x 4-40 x 1/2" pan head sheet metal screws to get the plastic strips on tight against the bumper. Here's pic of one of the screws and how it's installed:

I found my opened can of POR-15 that's been misplaced for about 2 years that I put into a mason jar and pulled a vacuum on (with a MityVac) to keep it from hardening. I put a vacuum gauge on the hose of the mason jar, opened the plastic clip and to my surprise, it had vacuum! Opened the can and the POR15 was not hardened into a rock and nice and liquid!

So I POR15-ed the corner support brackets which had quite a bit of rust. I don't think they came that well rust proofed from Mercedes (lousy paint) and being in a harsh environment that does not dry well are just super rust prone. Hopefully the POR15 will help.
