How do you get a window regulator OUT?
On a W124, I need to get the window regulator OUT of the door to look at it (unless there's a way to repair these without removing them). But I see a lot of info on the web and some here, talking about what to do once they're out.
This is for the driver's door. I've already taken the interior panel off, pulled the plastic back and taken off 5 red colored nuts, but the unit won't come out. My window is (thankfully) stuck in the 'up' position, so there's no glass there to contend with, but maybe that's why the unit won't come out. I've used a hammer on all 5 screws sticking out, but it won't budge. I can't think of anything holding it in place. Maybe I have to take the door cover off (if that's even possible)? Thanks, 1991 300d |

Never having done a regulator on that model itself. One common item though is all regulators in general are bolted to the rail on the glass. You usually have to lower the glass at least some way to get access to them.

dirty
I did the drivers door regulator on my 95 and it was a bear. It's like those puzzles where two nails are bent together and you have to move them just so to get them apart, except the 124 regulator was like having 4 bent nails stuck together. It has to come out. I've done a lot of jobs on my 95 and my 85 and the regulator on my 95 made my hands the dirtiest of all jobs. Just push and pull and wiggle long enough and you'll figure it out. After saying all that, I remember that I was unable to remove the plastic lock plunger button. I guess you just rip it off.

I'm finding out as I go
For anyone in the future who needs this, once you take the door off, there are 5 screws holding the regulator in. Take the nuts off, but if your window is in the "up" position, the regulator will NOT come out.
Be careful, but lower the window a bit, it will probably fall down a bit, then the screws will be loose. But you still can't get the regulator out. To get the regulator out, you have to take the speaker cover off, then drill out the 5 rivets holding the center bar in. Disconnect the motor. With that center bar out, now you can get the regulator out. Word of warning, when taking the motor off the old regulator if you're going to use that, I've been told it is spring loaded, and will take your hand off. So be careful. I haven't crossed that bridge yet, but will soon. |

junkyard experience
I once tried to remove a rear window regulator on a w124 in the junkyard. I learned that in order to remove, the window had to be lowered. I don't remember how much, but it did have to be lowered. The cable itself is spring loaded as I recall.
