Simple 5 Minute Fix for Slipping Pot Metal Gear

Many have suggested knurling the shaft, but this can make passing the shaft through the number wheels difficult and can cause the end of the shaft to bind where it rides in the bracket.

My solution was to tap the pot metal gear with a 3.0mm x 0.50 tap, which cuts just enough to expand the I.D. of the pot metal gear. I then added one light coating of blue Loctitie (super light with a straight pin) and then simply pushed the pin in from the drive gear end into the pot metal gear with a 10mm bolt.

Hit the exposed shaft end quickly with a light puff of compressed air and add a drop of MMO or air tool oil to counteract any residual Loctite.

Problem Fixed....

Works great and seems much closer than the 7% error that would technically exist between a 2.65:1 and a 2.47:1 ratio....
